This Alibag holiday home is a Wunderkammer of eclectic objects
Architectural Digest features a 21,000-square-foot Alibag holiday home designed by Farah Ahmed Mathias and Dhaval Shellugar of FADD Studio. The property, inspired by Spanish Revival aesthetics, breaks free from a singular style, embracing an eclectic mix of objects sourced from across India and beyond. Mathias emphasizes that the house needs to be experienced multisensorially for its aesthetic to be fully appreciated. The design team, including Pranav Dakoria, Manoj Gowda, and stylist Manisha Mittal, meticulously curated the decor to create a 'potpourri of objects' that stand out individually yet harmonize together.
The home's exterior features a hacienda-style porch with pink bougainvillaea, leading to a vestibule adorned with tribal Naga panels and antique totems. The living room is described as a 'Wunderkammer' of curiosities, showcasing a Kavita Singh sofa, a Naga table by Bari, a Jaipur Rugs carpet, a canoe planter by The Purple Turtles, a green daybed from ZJM Exports, and custom chandeliers and sconces. Adjoining the living room, a parlor doubles as a sunroom, furnished with a Pinakin Studio cane sofa and a Cane Boutique table with vintage tiles, complemented by emerald green floor lamps by Harshita Jhamtani and a collection of antique and client-owned tchotchkes.
Every design choice in the home is rooted in a significant moment, whether a conversation, a travel experience, or an accidental find. A prominent example is the swimming pool, strategically positioned to be visible from the main entrance. The dining room serves as a focal point with a large black stone table and Chandigarh chairs from ZJM Exports, contrasting with the garden designed by Hemali Landscape Studio. The attention to detail is evident throughout, from the pantry's delicate door handle made of rice Indonesian paper to the celestial angel sculptures by the window, which are balanced by European-inspired elements like a country-style antler chandelier and Georgian-esque doors that reinforce the Spanish Revival theme.
The breakfast area highlights a China mosaic floor and a vibrantly tiled ceiling resembling inverted stepwells, creating a unique visual experience. The grand staircase lobby impresses with flagstone walls, chevron flooring, a bone inlay table from House of Things, and Balinese chandeliers. In contrast, the family room offers a cozy atmosphere with a wood-paneled ceiling, a tropical-print sofa by Kavita Singh, and furnishings by Tahir Sultan and Sharma Farms. The interplay of light throughout the day continuously transforms the home's character. Shellugar concludes that the residence transcends the definition of a mere holiday home, offering a heavenly sanctuary for its inhabitants.
