10 easy decor hacks to rethink your interiors on a budget
This article offers ten simple yet effective decor hacks to refresh home interiors on a budget, provided by interior design expert Sabina Miller, Head of Buying at Heal’s. The tips focus on maximizing space, creating impact, and enhancing the overall aesthetic of a home without extensive renovations.
The first hack emphasizes giving furniture adequate space. It suggests moving sofas away from walls and maintaining a 45cm distance between seating and a central coffee table to avoid a cramped feel. When selecting a coffee table, its length should ideally be about two-thirds of the sofa's length to ensure proper proportions.
The second tip is to choose one statement hero piece per room. This could be a large, boldly colored furniture item, a patterned rug, or a striking piece of art. The hero piece is intended to draw attention, and its color can be subtly echoed elsewhere in the room for a cohesive look.
To create the illusion of height, especially in rooms with low ceilings, the third hack advises using low-profile furniture and incorporating tall, slim bookshelves to draw the eye upwards. Painting walls, skirting boards, and the ceiling in the same color can also blur architectural lines, making the room appear taller.
The fourth suggestion is to layer textures, patterns, and colors. This technique, starting with a dominant fabric like curtains or a rug, and then adding smaller-scale elements such as cushions and lampshades, helps create a lived-in and cozy atmosphere. Other layers to consider include lighting, artwork, plants, and books.
For hanging artwork, the fifth hack recommends positioning pieces at eye level, approximately 145cm from the floor to the center of the picture, to maintain a human scale. Smaller pieces can be hung above side tables or next to lamps for a more intimate feel, while gallery walls should be anchored by a main picture at eye level.
The sixth tip involves using mirrors to create an illusion of space and reflect views. Mirrors can visually expand a room and bring in more light, offering new perspectives within the space.
Lighting is addressed in the seventh hack, focusing on scale. For dining areas, a pendant or chandelier should be between half and two-thirds the width of the dining table to ensure harmonious proportions.
Window dressings are the subject of the eighth hack. To make small windows appear larger, curtains should extend beyond the window frame. Using full-wall, floor-to-ceiling curtains can add softness and a sense of expanse, while roman blinds are suggested for elegant, casual window treatments if long curtains are unsuitable.
The ninth tip encourages mixing up shapes to break the monotony of straight lines and right angles in a room. Incorporating round elements like coffee tables, side tables, or mirrors can soften the space and enhance its visual appeal. Large round mirrors, in particular, can make a statement and visually enlarge smaller rooms.
Finally, the tenth hack advises stepping back to assess the entire room. This objective viewpoint helps identify areas that need additions, replacements, or removals, such as an empty wall needing color or a corner requiring a plant. This holistic approach ensures all elements work together to achieve the desired interior design.
