This Designer Mom Reimagined Her Home’s Wet Bar as a Playroom

Ariella Fried, founder of Studio AF, undertook a significant renovation of her Los Angeles ranch home to create more functional and child-friendly spaces. Her primary revelation during the process was the freedom to completely gut existing structures that no longer served their purpose, rather than simply replacing them. This led her to transform a dated, dark wood wet bar into a dedicated playroom for her two-year-old daughter, Claire, providing a space where Claire could play within sight yet without her toys overwhelming the living area. The playroom, now a versatile nook with three blank walls, can easily adapt for future uses like a reading corner or an extension of the living space, making it a no-commitment solution. Fried applied a similar philosophy to Claire's nursery, which was originally an office. Instead of a complete overhaul, she strategically preserved the existing built-in shelving, recognizing the cost savings of custom millwork. She revitalized these built-ins by stripping, sanding, and painting them in Farrow & Ball's Ammonite, meticulously patching outlets and lock keyholes. The various cubby sizes proved unexpectedly ideal for organizing baby essentials, from diapers and wipes to even a small trash can. A clever addition of a $10 tension shower rod beneath a shelf provided hanging space for Claire's tiny garments, eliminating the need for a separate wardrobe. Another significant change in the nursery involved removing an unnecessary built-in bookshelf on the opposite wall. To maintain architectural integrity, Fried had the circa-1940s molding replicated to seamlessly match the rest of the room. The nursery walls were then painted in Farrow & Ball's Setting Plaster, a dusty pink shade with a hint of yellow. This specific color choice was deliberate, designed to be sophisticated and non-babyish, allowing the room's decor to evolve with Claire as she grows without requiring another paint job. Finally, Fried tackled a Jack-and-Jill bathroom on a tight budget. Her goal was to create a fresh, new appearance without extensive and costly renovations. This involved replacing the countertop and mirrors, and updating the floor with inexpensive 1-inch builder-grade white hex tiles. To achieve a cohesive and sophisticated look, she swapped the vanity drawer knobs for affordable wood ones from Lowe’s and painted all surfaces the same color. The result was a simplified, English-inspired aesthetic that felt completely refreshed despite the minimal investment, demonstrating how thoughtful design choices can transform a space without breaking the bank. #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #KidsRooms #PlayroomDesign #NurseryDesign #BeforeAndAfter #BudgetRenovation #FunctionalSpaces #FamilyHome #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #KidsRooms #PlayroomDesign #NurseryDesign #BeforeAndAfter #BudgetRenovation #FunctionalSpaces #FamilyHome
