B&A: A Lifeless Living Room Gets a DIY Fireplace Focal Point

Adaeze and Chad Brinkman undertook a living room renovation as part of the One Room Challenge, transforming their bland, personality-free new-build living room into a space that reflects their combined styles. Their home, built between 2022 and 2023, was a blank slate, primarily featuring white walls and beige carpets. The couple aimed to personalize it for under $2,500 using DIY and renter-friendly techniques. Chad's preference for modern, simple decor was combined with Adaeze's love for bold Afrohemian style, resulting in a unique aesthetic they termed "CHADAEZE." This blend is characterized by sleek modern silhouettes and metal finishes, alongside boho elements like plants, patterns, and woven textures. The most significant alteration to the living room was the construction of a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, designed to serve as a central focal point. The fireplace project involved building the lower half from a 2x4 and plywood framework, which was then wrapped in faux black stone. This part was assembled off the wall for easier installation. The electric insert in the fireplace provides warmth and the mantel was designed as a hollow box with hinges, allowing access to the unit and an electrical outlet behind it. For the upper section, wood strips were added to extend the feature to the ceiling. The background behind these strips and the strips themselves were painted black using leftover Behr's Warm Onyx paint, creating a cohesive, solid black appearance. While constructing the fireplace, the couple faced a minor challenge with the precise placement of the faux black stone covering. Adaeze emphasized the importance of thorough planning, including measuring everything meticulously, using painter's tape to visualize the fireplace on the blank wall, and sketching designs with measurements. She also advised reusing materials from previous projects to save costs, demonstrating this by using leftover paint. Beyond aesthetics, the renovated living room also improved functionality. Adaeze specifically appreciated that the fireplace now conceals their TV when not in use, addressing her desire for the television not to be the room's focal point. The Frame TV's ability to visually blend into the black wall as a piece of art contributes to this outcome. The couple also valued the cohesiveness achieved between the open-concept living room and kitchen, and the collaborative effort that went into the renovation. Adaeze expressed pride that their home uniquely reflects their combined efforts and personal style, something they hadn't observed in other homes. #LivingRoomDesign #DIYHomeDecor #FireplaceRemodel #AfrohemianStyle #ModernBoho #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #OneRoomChallenge #BudgetDecor #LivingRoomDesign #DIYHomeDecor #FireplaceRemodel #AfrohemianStyle #ModernBoho #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #OneRoomChallenge #BudgetDecor
