Inside Baton Rouge’s first succulent-focused boutique
Baton Rouge Succulent Company, the city's first succulent-focused boutique, emerged from owner Rozlan Fransen's passion for these unique plants. Fransen's initial fascination with succulents led her to frequent East Austin Succulents, a large outdoor nursery, where she admired the diverse collection. Her personal collection grew, sparking the idea to share this interest with her community.
In the preceding year, Fransen launched Baton Rouge Succulent Company, initially selling plants at local events like the Mid City Makers Market and Baton Rouge Brunch Fest. The venture quickly gained traction, accumulating nearly 4,000 Instagram followers after only a few pop-ups. This success prompted her to begin selling succulents and cacti in the courtyard of Frameworks Gallery, which she also owns, as a more consistent retail point.
In late January, the Baton Rouge Succulent Company opened its first dedicated storefront at 7276 Highland Road, close to the Frameworks Gallery. The boutique houses over 1,000 plants, representing more than 100 different species, ranging from vibrant hanging hoya plants to various cacti. Fransen dedicates significant effort to preparing the store, including creating website graphics and constructing displays.
Fransen's enthusiasm for succulents is evident as she describes them as "cute and unique looking." She also appreciates their reputation for being low-maintenance, a quality she values given her past difficulties with other houseplants. Her personal favorite is the kalanchoe plant, also known as the paddle plant, which was the first succulent to capture her attention due to its broad, flat leaves that can curl upward to resemble a rose when exposed to adequate sunlight.
Obtaining new plants is a highlight of her work, whether she's filling her Nissan Xterra with trays from a Louisiana wholesaler or receiving online orders from California. She describes unpacking bare-root shipments as being like "Christmas," with each plant carefully wrapped in tissue paper. Her future plans include building a greenhouse behind the shop to propagate her own succulents, a goal she is working towards by currently sourcing approximately 400 new succulents weekly from suppliers.
Beyond just plants, Baton Rouge Succulent Company offers a variety of related products, including gardening books, cards, plant-themed art prints, and company merchandise. The company also plans to introduce workshops and classes, envisioning a "Painting with a Twist" style experience but centered on plants. Additionally, Fransen intends to offer succulent arrangements and bouquets for weddings, expanding the business's scope. Reflecting on the journey, Fransen notes the rapid growth of her business, exceeding her initial expectations. The company's website is brsucculentco.com.
