10 Rising Young Product Designers Seen at IMM 2020

The home furnishings trade show IMM Cologne annually highlights emerging design talent through its Pure Talents Contest, which has previously featured designers like Sebastian Herkner. This article showcases ten notable finds from the 2020 edition, illustrating innovative approaches to furniture, lighting, and home accessories. First prize in the Pure Talents Contest went to Marie Kurstjens and Iva Coskun for their Levi Table, a flat-pack design intended for university students that emphasizes intuitive, tool-free assembly and disassembly. This addresses a common challenge with flat-pack furniture by simplifying the user experience. Following this, Japanese industrial designer Hiroyuki Morita received second prize for Omit, an electricity-free vacuum cleaner designed for scenarios where power outlets are unavailable, such as cleaning a car. This invention focuses on practical, off-grid functionality. Lighting innovations include Sofia Souidi’s Jojo Lamp, a wind-up light whose intensity gradually dims over time, moving from warm and bright to subtle illumination. Thalea Schmalenberg and Kasper Friis Egelund also presented the Fold Lamp, inspired by the simplicity of a paper fan. This lamp features a foldable paper shade that can be collapsed and stored within an aluminum stand when not in use, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical storage solutions. Furniture designs demonstrated a focus on material celebration and emotional interaction. Sho Ota’s According to the Grain collection highlights the natural knots in wood, integrating these unique features into the aesthetic of his seating. Qing Deng introduced Aspirator, a conceptual "psychological vacuum cleaner" where expressed negative emotions inflate an airbag, which then transforms into a seat. This piece aims to provide a physical outlet for emotional release, allowing users to create a space for relaxation and problem-solving. Filip Lenarcik's Flow Chair exemplifies that flat-pack designs can achieve a classic look, consisting of four main elements and eight joints for streamlined assembly. In terms of sustainable and innovative material use, Daan De Wit's Stratum Tempus Vase Collection features conical forms created by laser-cutting sheet materials, such as 100 percent recycled acrylic or bamboo, into concentric layers. This process is designed to minimize waste. Furthermore, Tim Krahmer addressed the environmental impact of vacuum cleaners with Tenok, an open-source design that utilizes an online instruction manual and a 3D-printed adapter to incorporate functional used vacuum cleaner parts from various manufacturers. This promotes reuse and reduces waste in an often-discarded appliance category. Finally, Peter Otto Vosding's Pipeline Table draws attention to its functionality by making its large pull-out pipe, which extends the table, a visible design element. This design choice emphasizes the table's adaptable nature while celebrating its mechanical components. Overall, the selected designers from IMM 2020 presented a diverse range of products that combine practical utility, aesthetic innovation, and a growing consciousness for sustainability and user experience in home furnishings and accessories. #IMM Cologne #PureTalentsContest #ProductDesign #EmergingDesigners #SustainableDesign #FlatPackFurniture #HomeFurnishings #InnovativeProducts #InteriorDesignTrends #IMM Cologne #PureTalentsContest #ProductDesign #EmergingDesigners #SustainableDesign #FlatPackFurniture #HomeFurnishings #InnovativeProducts #InteriorDesignTrends
