Talking Trends with Tracker Home Decor's John Murphy
John Murphy, co-owner of Tracker Home Décor in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, established the business in 2010 with partner Helen Koch, after a varied career that included dishwashing, sales roles, and an interior design internship. The company has since expanded to include eight year-round employees and a second retail location downtown. Murphy discusses modern Vineyard style, noting a prevailing desire for transitional aesthetics in homes that can accommodate both summer and winter living.
The design approach emphasizes a casual yet elegant atmosphere, avoiding overly formal or summery looks. This is achieved through the extensive use of easy-care, performance fabrics like Sunbrella, which are durable and cleanable, catering to clients with children or pets. For seasonal transitions, Murphy suggests practical changes such as slipcovers, which can be easily removed and laundered for summer, revealing a more substantial, winter-appropriate upholstery underneath. Rugs are also highlighted as a key element for transforming the feel of a space.
Murphy describes the business's operational rhythm, explaining that the period after summer is particularly busy, with clients preparing their homes for the upcoming holidays, primarily Thanksgiving, and then subsequent deadlines for Valentine’s Day and Memorial Day. While retail sales are slower during the winter, the focus shifts to project-based work. The main store's slightly secluded location allows for this project-centric approach, while the newer downtown location, named The Villager, aims to attract a broader clientele, including tourists and those arriving by boat.
Addressing the limited furniture options on the island, Murphy explains that Tracker Home Décor has developed numerous external sources for their inventory. The team actively engages in "hunting and gathering," visiting events like Brimfield and estate sales to discover unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that differentiate their offerings. Murphy also addresses a common perception about the business, clarifying that despite some beliefs, Tracker Home Décor is not exclusively expensive. He emphasizes that they cater to a wide range of budgets and price points, making their services accessible to various clients. The most enjoyable aspect of his work, according to Murphy, is the opportunity to develop personal relationships with clients, transforming them into friends, and finding satisfaction in both small and large design challenges.
