Roberto Lazzeroni's expressive screen for Giorgetti is inspired by Aurora Borealis
Italian furniture company Giorgetti is set to preview its new collections ahead of Salone del Mobile 2022, featuring a notable screen designed by Tuscany-based architect Roberto Lazzeroni. This new piece is a continuation of a long-standing collaboration between Giorgetti and Lazzeroni, which has previously yielded a range of furniture including chairs, beds, tables, sofas, functional home office desks, and storage units. The collaboration highlights Giorgetti's commitment to working with established designers to push the boundaries of furniture design and craftsmanship.
The featured design, named the Borealis screen, functions as a sophisticated room divider. It is conceived to introduce a sense of intimacy within living spaces and bedrooms. The design is characterized by its intuitive nature and represents a new, more expressive direction in Lazzeroni's work. The screen comprises three rotating modules, each defined by an intricate composition of interwoven leather bands. The arrangement of these bands is specifically inspired by the natural patterns of the Aurora Borealis, from which the design derives its name, suggesting a fluid and organic aesthetic.
The construction of the Borealis screen involves a complex layering process. Each leather band consists of two distinct layers of leather, each in a different color. These dual-layered bands are then skillfully twisted to form eyelets of varying dimensions. The resulting twisted bands are arranged asymmetrically on a pewter-finish aluminum frame, contributing to the screen's visual depth and unique texture. This meticulous process underscores the high level of craftsmanship involved in its creation.
Lazzeroni’s design serves as a tribute to Giorgetti’s rich heritage in leather craftsmanship. It effectively showcases the exceptional artisanal expertise of the company’s team, particularly in sewing and finishing leather upholstery. Through the Borealis screen, Giorgetti’s traditional skills are expressed in a contemporary and creative manner. Lazzeroni emphasized the functional and decorative aspects of the piece, stating that it is a useful complement for creating intimate spaces and possesses a strong decorative value that speaks to Giorgetti's craftsmanship.
He further detailed the construction, noting how the two-color leather strips are sewn to a metal frame under tension, and where they meet, they are secured by small manual stitching, creating visually appealing bows. This attention to detail and the combination of traditional techniques with innovative design characterize the Borealis screen. The full collection of furniture from Giorgetti, including this new screen, is scheduled to be unveiled in Milan in June 2022, coinciding with one of the most significant events in the international design calendar.
