marleen kaptein employs aerospace fibre placement technique to form carbon chair
Marleen Kaptein, a furniture designer, has partnered with the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) to develop an innovative line of furniture using an aerospace fiber placement technique. This collaboration grants Kaptein access to a sophisticated fiber placement robot, typically utilized for industrial applications, which can print thin yet exceptionally strong carbon tape in various directions. This advanced fabrication method has been adapted by Kaptein to create two distinct armchairs and a lamp.
The collection, which includes the ‘Fibre Placement Chair’, ‘Recycled Carbon Chair’, and ‘Fibre Placement Lamp’, showcases the unique capabilities of this technology, material, and manufacturing process. Kaptein's approach involves scaling down the industrial technique for a more intimate application in furniture design. The project delves into the entire production chain, from the raw materials and the manufacturing process itself, to the handling of waste materials, emphasizing a holistic view of sustainable design and production.
The initial pieces from this collection were introduced during Milan Design Week 2016. While the armchairs are currently in their prototyping phase, the ‘Fibre Placement Lamp’ is already being produced by LABEL/BREED. The primary focus of this collection is not merely the aesthetic outcome, but rather the exploration and advancement of the manufacturing process itself. This highlights a design philosophy that values the integration of high-tech production methods into consumer products.
By leveraging aerospace technology, Kaptein aims to demonstrate how cutting-edge industrial processes can be reimagined and applied to create everyday objects. The use of carbon fiber, known for its strength and lightweight properties, allows for the creation of durable yet visually delicate structures.
