How to Take Your Bathroom From Shabby to Chic, According to a Los Angeles Designer

Los Angeles designer Rob Diaz of Diaz + Alexander Architecture shares his expert recommendations for transforming a bathroom from outdated to chic. He emphasizes the importance of selecting key elements that contribute significantly to both aesthetics and functionality during a bathroom renovation. Diaz advises clients on specific product categories, including plumbing fixtures, vanity materials, tiles, sinks, lighting, and window treatments, highlighting how each choice can elevate the space. For plumbing appliances, Diaz suggests focusing on matte black or aged brass finishes, noting that while the aesthetic impact is significant, the cost doesn't always reflect the brand, allowing for budget-friendly yet stylish selections. He cites Watermark Designs as a preferred brand for their diverse range of bathroom and kitchen hardware. When it comes to vanities, he encourages bold choices, like those with dramatic veining, to create a statement piece within the primary bathroom, referencing a Sherman Oaks project where a distinctive vanity was a central design element. Regarding tiling, Diaz expresses a preference for natural zellige tile for showers. This choice is valued for its ability to introduce texture and depth, transforming a simple shower into a more visually engaging feature. He also creatively uses offcuts from vanity counters to craft integrated elements such as shower bases and floating soap shelves, demonstrating a resourceful approach to material usage and a commitment to cohesive design. For sinks, the designer suggests integrating them seamlessly into natural stone, such as marble or soapstone, and often purchases sufficient stone to ensure a unified design throughout the bathroom. He specifically recommends Kast Concrete Basins, a UK-based company known for its unique and colorful concrete basins, exemplified by their whimsical Aura basin available in 28 colors. Lighting is another critical aspect of bathroom design, and Diaz favors Apparatus Studio and The Urban Electric Co. He explains how specific fixtures, like Apparatus Studio’s Arrow light, can provide a modern aesthetic and balance large features, such as a 17-foot-long Arabascato marble floating vanity in the Sherman Oaks project. The Urban Electric Co. fixtures are used to frame mirrors and draw attention to bold material choices. Finally, for primary bathrooms, Diaz advises using soft woods for cabinetry, light-colored flooring, and natural shades for windows and doors. He particularly endorses Everhem motorized woven shades, which offer a natural texture and functional design element, enhancing both the visual appeal and practicality of the space. These recommendations collectively aim to guide homeowners in making informed choices that result in a sophisticated and well-designed bathroom. #BathroomRenovation #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #LuxuryBathrooms #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalDetails #MaterialSelection #BathroomRenovation #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #LuxuryBathrooms #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalDetails #MaterialSelection
