How Much Does A Bathroom Renovation Cost in 2022

Renovating a bathroom is a common home improvement project in Australia, second only to kitchen renovations, and it can significantly increase a property's value. According to the Housing Industry Association (HIA), the average cost of a bathroom renovation in Australia was $17,522, closely aligning with the average cost of a new bathroom in a brand new home, which is $16,430. However, renovation costs can vary widely depending on the scope and desired quality. A budget renovation for a small bathroom can start from $5,000, while a major renovation in a larger bathroom can exceed $25,000. Minor cosmetic updates, such as changing fixtures and knobs, can cost even less. Several factors influence the total cost, including the need for structural work, such as relocating plumbing, and the choice of materials like floor and wall tiles. The size of the bathroom, whether it's an ensuite or a large family bathroom, also impacts the budget. Additionally, luxury features like underfloor heating or heated towel racks can add to the expense. Generally, bathroom renovations are categorized into budget ($5,000 to $15,000), standard ($15,000 to $25,000), and premium (over $25,000). Material choices significantly affect costs. Budget tiles typically range from $30 to $55 per square metre, whereas premium tiles can cost $165 per square metre or more. Toilets vary from basic models at $120 to standard ones around $400, and premium options can reach $1,200, with some high-end units costing up to $42,000. Vanities range from $120 to $400 for budget models, $700 to $850 for standard, and $1,500 for premium. Bathtubs also come in different price ranges: budget options made of fibre or acrylic glass cost $300 to $1,000; mid-range bathtubs made of cast iron, steel, or polymer cost $1,000 to $3,000; and premium stone bathtubs can cost $3,000 to $8,000. Installation costs for bathtubs also vary based on their type, such as free-standing or alcove installations. Most bathroom renovations require the expertise of various tradespeople, unless the homeowner is exceptionally skilled. A typical renovation may involve an electrician for lighting, heating, exhaust fans, and hot water heaters; a tiler for waterproofing and tiling; a plumber for moving or adding plumbing and installing sanitary ware; and a carpenter for shelving or cabinetry. For more complex or upscale designs, a dedicated bathroom designer might be consulted. It is advisable to request examples of previous work and confirm licenses for all tradespeople through relevant state and territory bodies or industry associations like the Master Builders Association. Hourly rates for tradespeople, based on a national average from Service Seeking, include tilers at $44.93, painters at $42.56, carpenters at $56.45, electricians at $75.56, and plumbers at $80.92. These rates are averages and can vary by region due to factors like labor shortages. For a $10,000 budget, renovations could include resurfacing tiles, adding features, installing PVC panels, and changing a bath, shower, vanity, or tapware. Replacing mirrors or adding a window or skylight can also enhance the space, particularly before selling a property. For renovations under $5,000, options include cleaning tiles, repainting walls, resurfacing bathtubs and basins, and modernizing light fittings and tapware. While some tasks can be DIY, resurfacing should ideally be done by professionals. A general guideline is to undertake renovations that are expected to increase the home's value by at least twice their cost. Brendan Cunningham, director of BTC Constructions, highlights five crucial factors for bathroom renovations: checking for rot or water damage before relining walls, ensuring waterproofing is inspected and certified, installing correct drainage with proper falls in the shower, selecting appropriately sized tiles (avoiding large tiles in small bathrooms), and using large mirrors to visually expand the space. For flooring, easy-to-maintain options like glazed or porcelain tiles are recommended, while porous materials such as natural stone and limestone should be avoided unless properly sealed. Non-slip flooring is essential for safety, especially in homes with children or individuals with mobility issues, and can be achieved with textured, matte, or sand-glazed tiles, or smaller tiles with more grout lines. Proper ventilation is also critical to prevent moisture damage, requiring a functional and adequately sized vent fan. #BathroomRenovationCosts #HomeImprovement #PropertyValue #TradespeopleCosts #TileSelection #Plumbing #Ventilation #AustraliaProperty #RenovationBudget #BathroomRenovationCosts #HomeImprovement #PropertyValue #TradespeopleCosts #TileSelection #Plumbing #Ventilation #AustraliaProperty #RenovationBudget
