8 bathroom renovation trends defining 2023
The home renovation and design platform Houzz has published its 2023 bathroom trends report, highlighting current preferences in bathroom design and styling. The report is based on data collected from over 400 homeowners who are either undertaking, planning, or have recently completed a bathroom renovation project. It reveals a strong emphasis on balancing aesthetic desires with functional necessities in modern bathroom designs.
One significant trend identified is the increasing size of showers, with 68% of homeowners opting for larger showers, and 32% even doubling their size. Among those who removed bathtubs, 82% did so to accommodate a more spacious shower, indicating a preference for elevating the daily shower experience. Complementing this, 78% of renovators invested in waterfall showers, reflecting a desire for self-care and a sanctuary-inspired 'spathroom' environment. Despite the surge in shower popularity, baths are not entirely obsolete; one in three homeowners chose a freestanding tub, and 43% upgraded to larger baths capable of accommodating two people, suggesting a desire for immersive soaks or shared relaxation.
Technology plays a crucial role in contemporary bathroom renovations, with homeowners integrating digital shower controls and high-tech, automatic-feature toilets. Houseplants have also become a key styling element, valued for their mood-boosting and air-purpurifying qualities, though careful selection is advised due to the steamy bathroom environment.
In terms of color, neutrality prevails, with white remaining the most popular choice, followed by grey and beige. This indicates a preference for calm and quiet spaces conducive to unwinding. The overall design aesthetic leans towards modern and minimalist styles, with nearly 70% of renovations adopting a contemporary approach. Features like low-curb showers, wall-mounted fixtures, soft-close mechanisms, and integrated organizers underscore a demand for uncluttered, streamlined, and efficient bathrooms, aligning with principles of organization.
Finally, sustainability is a growing concern, influencing renovation decisions. Homeowners are increasingly choosing energy-efficient systems like radiant heating, prioritizing showers over baths for water conservation, and selecting efficient appliances, reflecting a commitment to environmentally conscious choices.
