How 4 Dining Room Makeovers Transformed These NoVA Homes
This article showcases four dining room makeovers in Northern Virginia, each demonstrating distinct design philosophies and achieving unique atmospheres. Designers addressed various homeowner preferences and room challenges, transforming these spaces into both beautiful and functional areas for entertaining and daily life.
The first makeover, titled "In Black and White," features a newly built Fairfax home where designer Alexis Dattoli was tasked with enhancing an existing neutral black-and-white palette. The goal was to create an impactful, modern, and clean-lined dining room that wowed guests while remaining functional for a family of five. Dattoli introduced textural contrasts through a geometric-patterned taupe rug and combined angular and curved furniture pieces, such as a rectilinear dining table and upholstered chairs. A gold-brass chandelier and woven fiber display pedestals were added, alongside large-scale black and white accessories, to introduce history and sophistication to the contemporary space.
In "All Lit Up," designer Alex Deringer of Deringer Design refreshed an Alexandria dining room that suffered from a lack of natural light due to its proximity to a side screened porch. Deringer focused on strategic lighting, incorporating a custom-designed Ro Sham Beaux chandelier featuring mirrored and glass beads and gold-washed twine to provide glamour and sparkle. Complementary multi-shaded sconces on dimmers offered ambient lighting. The room's mostly neutral ivory and tan palette was subtly enhanced with hints of pale blue and coral. A textured Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wall covering, a Schumacher textile for dining chair upholstery, and silk curtain panels added warmth and texture, making the space suitable for both holiday gatherings and year-round entertaining.
The third project, "Clever Compromise," involved Aldie homeowners with conflicting design preferences: one favored dark and moody décor, while the other desired a more feminine and stylish aesthetic. Interior designer Stacey Dobrovolny of Two Navy Lane facilitated a compromise by blending these contrasting tastes. She established a primary palette of browns and grays, appealing to the husband's preference, and introduced an interesting vinyl wall covering with a bleached wood appearance. For the wife's taste, Dobrovolny installed double chandeliers for a glamorous touch and incorporated a chic leopard skin-patterned rug in a masculine colorway. The ceiling was painted a dark charcoal gray to enhance the moody elegance. A sleek wood dining table was paired with soft upholstered chairs, and a sunburst mirror above an art deco-inspired sideboard completed the look. This design successfully created an intimate yet elegant space, beloved by both homeowners.
Finally, "Packing A Punch" highlights designer Ame Gold of Ame Gold Design's bold approach for an Arlington dining room. The homeowners desired a daring and artistic space that would evoke a strong reaction. Gold centered the design around a large-scale, graphic black-and-white wallpaper with a woven texture, which served as the primary inspiration. To balance drama with practicality for a family with two children and a dog, Gold selected an easy-to-clean glass-top table with an Italian iron base and sturdy chairs upholstered in hot-pink Sunbrella fabric. A mirror-backed wine storage unit above a built-in bar provided additional drama, with backlighting for ambiance at night. This makeover successfully delivered a practical dining area with a significant 'wow' factor for both daily use and entertaining.
