benjamin hubert: cradle lounge chair + net tables for moroso
Benjamin Hubert, a London-based designer, has introduced two new furniture pieces for the Italian company Moroso: the 'Cradle' lounge chair and the 'Net' collection of small tables. Both designs aim to blend innovative materials and construction methods with functional aesthetics for contemporary living spaces.
The 'Cradle' lounge chair represents a hybrid of two distinct seating types: a net-structured hammock and a traditional upholstered lounge chair. The design emphasizes architectural lines, featuring a sharp, rectilinear backrest that provides a visual contrast to the softer, more yielding seating area. A key innovation in the 'Cradle' chair is its use of a custom-made CNC-cut pattern, which enables a non-elastic textile to be stretched precisely around a metal frame. This technique allows the fabric to conform in a controlled three-dimensional manner, achieving the necessary tension to comfortably support the body. The design choice to utilize this stretched textile not only contributes to the chair's unique aesthetic but also serves practical purposes by visually and physically reducing the product's overall weight and manufacturing cost. The 'Cradle' chair's backrest detail further highlights the play of light through its stretched mesh, adding a dynamic visual element.
Alongside the 'Cradle' chair, Hubert also launched the 'Net' collection of small tables, which debuted at Salone del Mobile 2013. This collection recontextualizes expanded steel, a material typically associated with industrial equipment and building construction, for domestic furniture. The expanded steel is manipulated into cylindrical bases and circular tops, then finished with a powder-coated paint. The industrial origins of the material are referenced in the tables' design, particularly through the perforations in the large surface area. These perforations contribute to a sense of lightness while being finely sized to prevent small objects from falling through. The 'Net' tables embody a blend of robust industrial material with refined design suitable for modern interiors, offering both durability and an airy visual presence.
