The InterView: Keenan Johnson, Interior Designer for FleischmanGarcia

Keenan Johnson, an interior designer at FleischmanGarcia, shares his journey and insights into the interior design industry. He grew up in Plant City, Florida, on a farm, and despite societal expectations that often steer boys away from interior design, he pursued his passion, inspired by HGTV shows from a young age. His family background, marked by hard-working African American men and women, including a grandfather who was a roofer and another a railroad lineman, and a father who worked two jobs, instilled in him a strong work ethic and motivation. This foundation drives him to continue excelling in his career. Johnson is in his ninth year in the industry, with eight of those years spent at FleischmanGarcia. He leads commercial interior design for the Tampa office, a role he describes as a combination of designer, mentor, and therapist. The dynamic nature of the industry is a key motivator for him; each day presents new challenges, from meeting prospective clients and preparing design presentations to drafting intricate construction details. He finds immense satisfaction in seeing his conceptual designs materialize into physical spaces, often experiencing a childlike wonder when visiting construction sites. His design philosophy is rooted in the principle of “less is more,” emphasizing that good design is achieved through subtraction. He believes that if every element in a space competes for attention, nothing truly stands out. Therefore, his selection process involves purging elements that do not contribute meaningfully to the overall vision of a project. Johnson takes pride in both his inaugural project, a pool house for a Tampa nonprofit, which he playfully refers to as having the most fabulous restrooms in Tampa, and his current endeavor, the Tampa Municipal City Center on Hanna Avenue. This ambitious project aims to transform the center into a cultural landmark for East Tampa, a development he hopes will make the community proud. Beyond commercial projects, Johnson has also undertaken significant residential work. He has collaborated with notable clients, including a prominent financial investor, a world-renowned American sailor, and a fashion designer in the Virgin Islands. The project for the fashion designer involved transforming her St. Martin cliffside home, drawing inspiration from a recent trip to Majorca, Spain. This project allowed him to incorporate vibrant patterns through textiles, tapestries, and hand-carved pieces, creating a unique and memorable space. Johnson's design influences span both historical and contemporary figures. He admires the bold and larger-than-life work of Dorothy Draper and finds current inspiration in the works of Kesha Franklin and Leyden Lewis. He also draws parallels between interior design and fashion, viewing both as forms of expression. He suggests that trends in fashion, such as patterns on clothing, can be effectively translated into interior elements like accent chairs, demonstrating the interconnectedness of these creative fields. Looking to the future of interior design in Tampa, Johnson observes the rapid growth in the city's construction and real estate markets. He foresees a critical need for designers and creatives to leverage this growth to define Tampa's cultural identity through design and art. He anticipates that the collaborative efforts of designers today will lead to the emergence of landmark and culturally significant spaces within the city in the coming years. #InteriorDesign #KeenanJohnson #FleischmanGarcia #TampaDesign #DesignPhilosophy #CommercialDesign #ResidentialDesign #DesignInspiration #TampaCulture #InteriorDesign #KeenanJohnson #FleischmanGarcia #TampaDesign #DesignPhilosophy #CommercialDesign #ResidentialDesign #DesignInspiration #TampaCulture
