4 Common Wall Hanging Myths, Busted

Many homeowners hesitate to hang items on their walls due to common misconceptions about structural integrity and potential damage. These concerns often lead to a backlog of artwork and other decorative elements waiting to be installed. Common fears include the safety of mounting objects on brick walls, the possibility of drilling through ceramic tile, and the weight capacity of plaster walls. To address these prevalent concerns, experts in art installation and design provide clarity and practical advice. One common myth is that mounting objects on brick walls is a bad idea. In reality, brick and its mortar are sturdier than drywall, offering a robust base for hangings. While drilling into brick can be challenging, mortar is relatively easier to work with and patch. For mortar, a 1/8-inch Bosch masonry bit followed by a masonry or drywall screw of the same or slightly thicker gauge is recommended. If drilling directly into brick, a lead anchor or masonry sleeve should be used. This approach preserves the brick's aesthetic, as mortar is simpler to fill and repair than brick itself. Another prevalent myth suggests that it is impossible to mount items on tiled walls. While sticky hooks offer a temporary solution for lightweight objects, anything with substantial weight necessitates drilling into the tile and using anchors. Katie Battaglia, design director at Nemo Tile+Stone, advises using a diamond-head drill bit and emphasizes precise measurements to avoid errors. For exceptionally heavy fixtures, such as wall-hung vanities, the wall should be reinforced with one or two layers of plywood before tiling to ensure adequate weight-bearing capacity. Drilling directly through tile without proper reinforcement can cause the tile to dislodge. It is crucial to verify that glass tiles are not tempered, as drilling into tempered glass will cause it to shatter. If glass tiles are untempered, or for porcelain, ceramic, and terra cotta tiles, drilling is feasible but requires keeping the drill bit wet to prevent overheating and tile damage. Using mortar joints instead of drilling directly into certain glass tiles is also a viable option. Furthermore, the idea that plaster walls are inherently weaker than drywall is often mistaken. Both plaster and drywall can support similar weights. The primary difference lies in their consistency: drywall is softer, whereas plaster can vary significantly in hardness, from very brittle to relatively soft. For plaster walls, using skinny nails, such as finishing brads, and slowly driving them into place is effective. If nails bend, they should be replaced with fresh ones. Alternatively, a masonry bit can be used to create a pilot hole for a drywall screw. Regardless of the method, a “tug test” is recommended to confirm the stability of the hanging. If the fixture feels loose, it indicates a need to locate and drill into a stud for better support. The final myth is the absolute necessity of always finding a stud for wall hangings. While studs provide the strongest support, they are not always required for typical household items. For most paintings and pictures owned by homeowners, drilling into a stud is not essential. However, for items weighing 100 pounds or more, or if the tug test on drywall or plaster walls indicates insufficient support, locating a stud or hiring a professional is advisable to prevent damage or injury. This ensures that heavy or valuable items are securely mounted, mitigating risks. #WallHanging #HomeImprovement #DIY #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #BrickWalls #TiledWalls #PlasterWalls #StudFinders #WallHanging #HomeImprovement #DIY #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #BrickWalls #TiledWalls #PlasterWalls #StudFinders
