7 Design Ideas HGTV's Christina Haack Ditched After 'Flip Or Flop'

HGTV personality Christina Haack has undergone a significant evolution in her design aesthetic since her time on "Flip or Flop." Initially known for a consistent style, her work across shows like "Christina on the Coast" and "Christina in the Countryside" reflects a shift towards more diverse and contemporary trends. One of the most notable changes is her move away from plain white kitchen cabinets. During "Flip or Flop," Haack frequently utilized white cabinets and cool-toned neutrals to create a sleek, minimalistic look, which was popular at the time as a contrast to the darker Tuscan styles of the 1990s. This approach, exemplified in Season 7, Episode 5, aimed for a light and open feel. However, her recent renovations showcase a preference for natural wood grain cabinetry, aligning with the resurgence of darker wood furniture and rich, organic decor. An Instagram post from "The Flip Off" revealed a kitchen featuring natural wood cabinets paired with dramatic marble countertops, highlighting this new direction. Haack's spaces, while still modern, now incorporate vintage elements. In earlier "Flip or Flop" episodes, such as Season 5, Episode 11, she expressed a desire to update vintage interiors to a more contemporary style. Critics, however, sometimes found her designs overly modern and out of sync with a home's architectural character. Presently, she integrates character-filled details like vintage-style ranges, as seen on her Instagram, and experiments with traditional materials such as handcrafted clay tiles and reclaimed wood beams. These additions provide a warmth and uniqueness that was less present in her previous work. Her former reliance on neutral painted walls, particularly shades of gray, has given way to bold wallpaper. In Season 5, Episode 7 of "Flip or Flop," an accent wall painted a slightly different shade of gray was considered her most daring design choice. This all-gray aesthetic, often dubbed "Millennial Gray," is now seen as dated. Haack's latest interiors, however, feature vibrant and daring wall coverings, such as the multi-colored floral wallpaper showcased in a recent bathroom remodel on her Instagram, indicating a significant departure from her earlier, more conservative approach. The emphasis on low-profile, sleek surfaces has been replaced by a greater appreciation for texture. In "Christina on the Coast" Season 1, Episode 2, despite a home being described as "boho-chic," Haack opted for a clean makeover with minimal visual variation and cool neutral tones, leaving the space craving texture. Today, she embraces fluted wood, a texture she frequently uses for islands, accent walls, and even shower elements, as shared on her Instagram. This allows for bold statements without relying solely on color, often incorporating matte black for a contemporary contrast against textured backsplashes. Ivory and beige tile floors, once a staple in her flips, have been largely replaced by hardwood. In "Flip or Flop" Season 2, Episode 10, Haack and Tarek opted to keep cream-colored tiles and use beige, travertine-style tiles, a trend that has since become associated with the "sad beige" aesthetic. Haack now favors timeless wood floors, which offer richer tones and visual variation. Even when hardwood isn't feasible, she suggests luxury vinyl flooring that mimics the look of real wood, demonstrating a preference for more dynamic and enduring flooring options. Finally, her approach to shiplap has evolved from white, minimalistic planks to colorful variations. Although shiplap has remained a consistent element she supports, her early designs featured low-profile, colorless shiplap. In "Christina in the Country" Season 1, Episode 4, she actively suggested painting shiplap a "pretty color," ultimately choosing blue, to make it pop. This move signifies a shift towards using color and boldness in design elements that were previously understated. Similarly, her formerly understated, neutral home exteriors have become more dramatic. While she once suggested light gray exteriors with a blue door, a conservative choice as noted by Tarek in "Flip or Flop" Season 8, Episode 3, her Tennessee home recently featured a bold, entirely black exterior. This reflects the rising popularity of black exteriors as a prominent contemporary trend, though she acknowledges alternatives like slate or dark brown for a similar effect. #ChristinaHaack #HGTV #HomeDesignTrends #InteriorDesignEvolution #KitchenDesign #WallpaperTrends #FlutedWood #Shiplap #ExteriorDesign #ChristinaHaack #HGTV #HomeDesignTrends #InteriorDesignEvolution #KitchenDesign #WallpaperTrends #FlutedWood #Shiplap #ExteriorDesign
