What's hot in the kitchen? Bigger islands, contrasting-color cabinets, more built-in storage
The 2024 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study reveals the current preferences of homeowners undertaking kitchen renovations, focusing on actual projects rather than aspirational wish lists. The study, which surveyed over 3,400 U.S. homeowners who recently completed or were in the midst of kitchen remodels, highlights several key trends shaping modern kitchen design. The article opens with a personal anecdote about the author's daughter and her husband embarking on a kitchen renovation, noting that their design choices align remarkably with the broader trends identified in the Houzz study.
One significant trend is the move towards more open-concept kitchens. Despite a period during the pandemic when homeowners were less inclined to open their kitchens to other living spaces, 43% of respondents reported making their kitchens more open to indoor areas, a 5% increase from previous years. A substantial portion of these homeowners, nearly two-thirds, achieved this by removing a wall. Another prominent trend emphasizes organized storage solutions, reflecting a consumer preference for functionality. Popular features include organizers for cookie sheets (55%), spice racks (44%), cutlery (41%), and utensils (37%), all showing increased popularity over the previous year.
Kitchen islands continue to grow in size and importance, solidifying their role as a central hub for cooking, dining, entertaining, and even work. The study indicates a strong trend towards larger islands with seating, with 42% of renovators adding an island 7 feet or longer, up from 38% last year. Smaller islands, less than 6 feet, are becoming less common. The article also touches upon the realities of renovation tradeoffs, acknowledging that a larger kitchen often necessitates sacrifices in other areas of the home, such as a smaller laundry room. Despite these compromises, homeowners are often counting on clever storage solutions to compensate for any lost space.
The majority of homeowners, 84%, rely on professional help for their kitchen renovations. General contractors are the most frequently hired professionals (55%), followed by cabinetmakers (35%), and about one in three homeowners engages a kitchen designer. In terms of aesthetics, light colors, particularly white, remain highly popular. White and cream counters are chosen by 43% of remodelers, and white cabinets are favored by 46%. Wood cabinets, in various shades, follow at 25%. A notable design trend is the use of contrasting colors for cabinetry, with a quarter of renovators opting for different colors on their upper and lower cabinets (often white above and wood below). Additionally, 46% chose a different color for their island than their main cabinets, with blue being the top choice for islands at 25%.
Lighting also plays a crucial role, with LED lighting incorporated into 91% of projects due to its sustainability and longevity. Recessed lighting is included in 75% of remodeled kitchens, under-cabinet lighting in 69%, and pendant lighting in over half (56%). Light dimmers are also increasingly popular, appearing in 47% of remodels. The cost of kitchen renovations continues to rise, with the median spend for a major remodel (including all new cabinets) reaching $55,000, a 22% increase from the previous year. Minor remodels saw a 29% increase, with a median cost of $18,000. Conversely, glass doors and open shelves are decreasing in popularity, as homeowners prefer concealed storage. The article concludes by noting the practical nature of these trends, reflecting what people are actually implementing in their homes rather than speculative design concepts.
