How to Clean Brick on Your Interior and Exterior Surfaces

Brick, a durable and low-maintenance material, typically requires infrequent cleaning, primarily for aesthetic reasons or to address specific issues like soot or mildew. Experts Jake Boyer of Prosoco and James Jennings of Brick Doctor emphasize that regular cleaning is not essential unless stains are present. However, certain stains, such as efflorescence, can indicate underlying structural problems like water ingress, which should be addressed before cleaning to prevent further damage to metal fasteners or anchors within the walls. For interior brick surfaces like fireplaces, exposed walls, or kitchen islands, the cleaning process involves a few simple steps. First, it's crucial to inspect the brickwork for any damage, such as loose mortar or cracks, and rectify these issues before proceeding. Furniture should be moved away from the area to provide ample working space. A masonry sponge dipped in warm water is usually sufficient for cleaning. For stubborn stains, a few drops of mild dish soap can be added to the water. Gentle scrubbing with a soft-bristled masonry brush can be used for particularly tough spots. Finally, the brick should be rinsed with clean, warm water using the sponge. Cleaning exterior brick walls requires a slightly different approach and an understanding of the stain type. Dirt and algae are generally easy to remove, while rust and other complex stains may necessitate specialized care and professional consultation. Similar to interior brick, a preliminary assessment for structural issues like large cracks, loose or unfilled mortar joints, or hairline cracks is vital. These problems must be fixed before any cleaning begins. If using a specialized cleaner, it should be spot-tested in an inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration or damage. Tough stains can be pre-treated with a sponge and brush. A pressure washer with a 25 or 40-degree nozzle/tip is recommended for exterior cleaning. The brick surface should be pre-wet on low pressure if not solely using water. Specialized cleaners can be added to the pressure washer's detergent tank. Cleaning should be done at low pressure, ideally under 2000 psi, maintaining a distance between the wand and the wall to avoid damaging the brick's surface, which can increase porosity and future water ingress. After cleaning, the brick should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water, especially if a cleaning agent was used. Once dry, a protective water repellent can be applied. Maintenance of brick surfaces is generally minimal, particularly for hard-fired bricks designed for residential use. However, for softer or more porous bricks like Mexican adobe or Old Chicago brick, applying a proprietary water repellent is recommended to keep them cleaner and extend their lifespan. Experts agree that a water repellent is the most effective way for homeowners to maintain brick, as it helps brick walls shed bulk water, thereby reducing or eliminating the solubilization of staining elements and their appearance on the visible surface. #BrickCleaning #HomeMaintenance #InteriorDesign #ExteriorCare #DIYHome #CleaningTips #MasonryCare #BrickCleaning #HomeMaintenance #InteriorDesign #ExteriorCare #DIYHome #CleaningTips #MasonryCare
