Should I paint an entryway light or dark? Here’s what the experts suggest

Entryways serve as the initial impression of a home, setting the tone for the entire interior. The decision of whether to paint an entryway light or dark depends on several factors, including the home's existing color palette, the size and natural light of the space, and the desired emotional impact. Interior design experts emphasize that there is no single right answer, and careful consideration of these elements is crucial. For homes with a predominantly darker color scheme, a dark entryway can create a cohesive and sophisticated transition. Conversely, a small entryway with limited natural light often benefits from lighter shades, which can make the space appear more expansive and welcoming. Emma Bestley, Creative Director and co-founder of YesColours, highlights that the chosen color should make the space feel both energizing and relaxing. If an entryway is generously sized, a darker color can make a grand statement, while a light color can offer a classic and effortless feel. Beyond just light or dark, the specific color choice plays a significant role. Enthusiasts of vibrant hues can opt for warm, bright colors like peach, yellow, or green to add vivacity. For a more enveloping and comforting atmosphere, deeper, saturated shades of blue, green, or burgundy can be used to color-drench the entire space, creating a cocooning effect. Practical considerations are equally important, especially given that entryways are high-traffic areas. Elizabeth Bennett, Partner at Kobel + Co, advocates for light and bright entryways, suggesting the incorporation of functional and personality-driven elements like antique benches and decorative pieces. She stresses that the paint used should be a high-quality, wipeable matt finish for durability. For wooden staircases and skirting boards, a durable eggshell paint is recommended, as its higher sheen level adds visual interest and reflects natural light, enhancing the brightness and airiness of the entrance. For those who appreciate dark interiors but are hesitant to fully commit to a dark entryway, creating a cool contrast offers a compelling design solution. Marie Flanigan from Marie Flanigan Interiors notes that a light entryway can be beautifully accentuated by darker tones to add visual interest. If the entryway opens into a living area with an already dark color scheme, painting the entryway a bright white can create a striking juxtaposition that amplifies the drama of the adjoining space rather than detracting from it. Ultimately, the goal is to make the entryway feel cohesive with the rest of the home, perhaps by selecting a lighter or darker variation of a color already present in the interior, to ensure a harmonious flow throughout the residence. #EntrywayDesign #InteriorPaint #ColorPsychology #HomeDecor #SmallSpaces #CohesiveDesign #LightingEffects #InteriorDesignTips #EntrywayDesign #InteriorPaint #ColorPsychology #HomeDecor #SmallSpaces #CohesiveDesign #LightingEffects #InteriorDesignTips
