Mika Lindblad designs Pinot collection without upholstery to highlight its construction

Graduate designer Mika Lindblad has created the Pinot seating collection, comprising a sofa and an easy chair, specifically designed to showcase the inherent construction of the furniture. The collection distinguishes itself by deliberately omitting traditional upholstery, a choice made to reveal the underlying craftsmanship and material integrity, which are often concealed by layers of fabric and foam. The primary materials used are oak wood, linen, and leather, chosen for their natural properties and sustainability. The design process was significantly influenced by a simple wooden embroidery hoop, which inspired Lindblad to explore a method of connecting the wooden frame with fabric without the need for adhesives. This inspiration led to a design where the backrest and seat are stretched around a laminated oak veneer framework. The veneer layers are pressed together using a formaldehyde- and isocyanate-free glue, ensuring an environmentally conscious approach. This technique not only provides a relaxed seating angle but also contributes to the overall comfort of the furniture, challenging the conventional belief that comfort is solely dependent on thick upholstery. Lindblad's intention was to highlight the intricate internal structure of seating furniture, which is typically hidden. By removing the upholstery, the design makes a statement about transparency in construction and the beauty of exposed components. The designer emphasizes that despite the lack of traditional padding, the Pinot collection maintains a high level of comfort. This is achieved through a subtle flexibility in the wooden frame, combined with the stretch properties of the woven linen and leather, which collectively create a soft and supportive seating experience. Sustainability is a core principle behind the Pinot collection. Each component of the chair can be easily separated, facilitating repair or updating and significantly reducing waste. Lindblad points out that conventional upholstered sofas often use glues to attach fabric to cold foam, resulting in complex structures of wood, metal springs, and foam that are difficult to recycle and often end up in landfills or incinerators. In contrast, the Pinot collection uses FSC-certified oak, which is untreated, carbon-neutral, and renewable. The leather used is a vegetable-tanned by-product from Scandinavian cattle, and the linen is undyed, further underscoring the project's commitment to natural and sustainable materials. The Pinot collection, developed by Lindblad for her graduate project from Beckmans College of Design in collaboration with furniture producer Swedese, has received recognition, having been longlisted for Dezeen Awards 2020 in the seating design project category. The project not only demonstrates innovative design but also advocates for a more sustainable and transparent approach to furniture manufacturing. #ProductDesign #SustainableDesign #FurnitureDesign #MikaLindblad #BeckmansCollegeOfDesign #Swedese #OakWood #LinenAndLeather #UpholsteryFree #ProductDesign #SustainableDesign #FurnitureDesign #MikaLindblad #BeckmansCollegeOfDesign #Swedese #OakWood #LinenAndLeather #UpholsteryFree
