Make a bold statement with custom draperies, shades

Window treatments, such as custom draperies and shades, offer a significant opportunity to enhance a home's aesthetic and functionality beyond simply letting in light. Amanda Davis Haynie, owner and designer of Milling Around Interiors in Shreveport, leverages her interior design expertise to assist clients in selecting fabrics and creating bespoke window treatments, pillows, and bedding. Her business, established in 1986, is a regional hub for luxurious fabrics, trims, and tassels, attracting customers from across the state. Haynie and her team provide comprehensive fabric services, including material selection, yardage calculation, and custom fabrication. For more extensive projects or whole-home design needs, Haynie offers in-home consultations, providing personalized design advice and measurements for an hourly fee. Beyond window treatments, Milling Around Interiors also undertakes light upholstery work and specializes in custom furniture, collaborating with North Carolina-based companies to create personalized sofas, chairs, ottomans, and beds using their wide array of fabrics. Additionally, they partner with a local headboard designer, Casey David, to produce custom headboards, offering an easy way to refresh a bedroom. When guiding homeowners on drapery choices, Haynie prioritizes understanding the desired function, whether for visual appeal, privacy, or thermal regulation. There is a vast range of drapery styles available, including options with leading edge trim, pinch pleating, inverted pleating, and casual pleats, which are currently popular. To combat the intense Louisiana heat, Milling Around Interiors utilizes specialized lining that can completely block sunlight, effectively blacking out a room. Roman shades are recommended for areas like doors, over bathtubs, or to complement existing architectural molding that might otherwise be obscured by traditional drapes. Inside-mounted Roman shades can soften windows while providing sun protection and privacy. For situations where privacy is not a primary concern, simpler options like valances or cornice boards can be effective. Haynie emphasizes that while she crafts intricate fabric art, she also recognizes when a window is best left unadorned, believing that drapery choices should align with the overall room design. Current trends include high demand for drapes made from sheers, silks, and faux silks, indicating that drapes remain a relevant design element. The trend leans towards simpler aesthetics, with flat braids replacing tassel trims on panel edges, suitable for both traditional and modern homes. Thinner metal rods are gaining popularity over bulkier wooden rods, reflecting a "less is more" philosophy that allows the drapes themselves to be the focal point. Roman shades are increasingly chosen over blinds, not only for their superior aesthetic but also for their sound absorption benefits. Remote-controlled Roman shades are particularly favored in modern homes and for high, hard-to-reach windows. Haynie advises lining drapes even for light and airy fabrics, as this acts as a "sunscreen" for the material, preventing sun damage and enhancing the exterior appearance of the home. In her design process, Haynie typically postpones fabric selection for window treatments until the final stages, preferring to first establish the room's style and color scheme. This foundational approach allows her to use the room as a guide for selecting fabrics for furniture and drapes, akin to solving a design puzzle where multiple fabric preferences are harmoniously integrated. #CustomDraperies #WindowTreatments #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #FabricSelection #RomanShades #Upholstery #ThermalControl #CustomDraperies #WindowTreatments #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #FabricSelection #RomanShades #Upholstery #ThermalControl
