Leviton Decora Smart Voice Dimmer and 4 Speed Fan Controller switches review
The Leviton Decora Smart Voice Dimmer and 4 Speed Fan Controller switches offer a practical entry point into smart home automation, eliminating the need for a separate hub and integrating seamlessly with existing systems. The switches are designed for easy installation, with clearly labeled wires and comprehensive instructions, making them suitable for beginner smart home users. Each switch includes a two-piece faceplate, although standard multi-switch faceplates can also be used, provided they are not metal, which could interfere with Wi-Fi connectivity.
Key features of the fan speed controller include support for fan motors up to 1.5A at 120VAC, operation in temperatures from 32°F to 104°F, and Wi-Fi compatibility with 802.11 a/b/g/n at 2.4GHz and 5GHz. It supports WPA or WPA2 security and is compatible with Android 6+ and iOS 11+ devices. The fan controller allows for four speed levels: low, medium, high, and max. Its physical design features a large toggle for on/off functions and a smaller toggle for speed adjustment. LED indicators show the current fan speed, although their uniform brightness across all levels can make it difficult to discern the active speed, particularly in well-lit environments.
The voice dimmer, designed with Amazon Alexa integration, handles LED/CFL bulbs up to 300W and incandescent bulbs up to 300W at 120VAC. It operates on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi with WPA or WPA2 security and Bluetooth V4.1. The dimmer features a large button for power, with press-and-hold functionality for light level adjustment. A dedicated action button activates Alexa, which responds promptly and audibly, even from a distance, despite the compact speaker's modest sound quality. A privacy feature allows users to disable Alexa's microphones by holding down the action button, turning it red. However, completely disabling Alexa without the red indicator is not straightforward, leading to potential conflicts if another Alexa-enabled device is already present in the same room.
Both switches incorporate an adjustable status LED at the bottom, which can be configured to illuminate when the switch is off (for dark room visibility), when it's on, or be turned off entirely. They also include pull tabs for easy resetting and power disconnection. The accompanying app offers granular control, enabling users to manage devices by room or individually. For the fan controller, the app allows setting minimum and maximum speeds, along with adjusting the status LED behavior. The voice dimmer's app controls include customizable fade-in/fade-out times and the ability to remember the previous dimming level, mirroring traditional dimmer switch functionality.
While both switches are praised for their ease of installation and app integration, suggestions for improvement include redesigning the fan speed indicator LEDs for clearer visual feedback and providing a more straightforward option to permanently disable Alexa on the voice dimmer for users with existing smart assistants. These devices, priced at $49.99 for the fan switch and $99.99 for the dimmer, are presented as effective solutions for enhancing home automation.
