Decorating with purple – 10 ways to use this versatile shade

Purple, a shade historically associated with royalty and tradition, is experiencing a resurgence in interior design, offering a versatile palette from soft lilacs to deep eggplants. This allows for the creation of diverse interior aesthetics, ranging from tranquil to dramatic. The key to successfully incorporating purple into home decor lies in selecting the appropriate shade to match the desired atmosphere, while also considering the room's light levels and orientation. For those aiming to make a bold statement, vibrant jewel tones and rich damson shades can introduce drama to spaces like dining rooms or provide an exciting pop of color in kitchens. Helen Shaw, UK director of Benjamin Moore, notes that saturated purples can envelop a room, making them ideal for spaces with ample natural light to create a captivating interplay of light and shadow. Conversely, softer hues like lavender and heather, reminiscent of nature, are well-suited for creating relaxing environments. These delicate purples add a touch of color without overwhelming a room, serving as an excellent backdrop for colorful furniture, homewares, and artwork. John Dison, founder of Earthborn, emphasizes that choosing a lighter shade makes the color less dominant, allowing for greater flexibility with other colors in the space. Dark purples, such as Annie Sloan's Tyrian Plum, can foster a cozy atmosphere in living rooms and bedrooms, as their deep tones create a cocooning effect. These rich purples can also be adapted for fresh and uplifting looks by pairing them with colors like navy blue, cornflower blues, soft pinks, and whites. When using dark purple, balancing it with softer colors is recommended. For example, Neptune's deep Clove shade can ground a space when used on the lower half of a wall, while a Sage shade above maintains a calm feel. This approach, as suggested by Rebecca Elderfield from Neptune, allows for a velvety and enveloping effect without being overpowering, and can be subtly balanced with shades like Old Rose and Moss, or boldly combined with Olive and Mustard for an eccentric touch. Lilac, with its soothing qualities, offers a relaxing alternative to popular blush pinks and pastel blues for bedrooms. John Dison highlights lilac's versatility as a neutral tone suitable for any room, particularly living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms where tranquility is desired. Layering different tones of purple can introduce depth and interest to a scheme. For instance, in a lilac bedroom, bolder purples can be incorporated through fabrics and soft furnishings to prevent the room from appearing bland. Saffron Hare, creative director at James Hare, suggests using purple boldly for curtains and varying shades for accessories like cushions and upholstery, noting that strong color details such as yellow can complement purple effectively. Bold purples can also be introduced as focal points through furniture or accessories, such as a velvet headboard. Emma Deterding of Kelling Designs points out that deep, rich purples like damson and aubergine hues, especially when paired with luxurious fabrics like velvet, create a dramatic and romantic boudoir. In kitchens, a saturated berry-toned island can inject color while maintaining a timeless feel, especially when base cabinetry remains neutral. Painting interior woodwork in shades like Little Greene's Knightsbridge can bring personality to a space and highlight architectural details. Lilac in a bathroom, such as Earthborn's Lily Lily Rose, offers a fresh and feminine touch, providing a sense of calmness and tranquility. Finally, dark purples, like Mylands' Empire Violet, can transform dimly lit rooms into characterful and glamorous spaces. These dark hues pair well with warm greys or lighter purple shades, and for a bold contrast, yellow can be used as an accent color. #PurpleDecor #InteriorDesign #ColorPalette #HomeDecor #LivingRoomIdeas #BedroomIdeas #KitchenDesign #BathroomColors #AccentColors #PurpleDecor #InteriorDesign #ColorPalette #HomeDecor #LivingRoomIdeas #BedroomIdeas #KitchenDesign #BathroomColors #AccentColors
