‘Skate Park House’ Features Outdoor Coastal Source Lighting, Audio System
This article highlights a residential project by Reynolds Lighting & Audio Design, which involved the installation of an extensive outdoor lighting and audio system at a new build near New Jersey's Long Beach Island. The project prominently features solutions from Coastal Source, known for its durable outdoor technology, and Lutron lighting control systems. The initial design included general outdoor lighting for various areas such as walkways, seating areas, fence gates, an outdoor shower pavilion, and landscaping.
A unique aspect of this project was the late addition of a professional-grade backyard skate park to the audio and lighting plan. The homeowners, particularly Vanessa Carvajal, realized that their teenage children could not safely utilize the skate park or the hot tub area after daylight hours. This led to an expansion of the outdoor lighting to ensure these areas were well-lit, allowing the children and their friends more time to practice surfing skills and enhancing the overall usability of the property for longer periods each day.
Reynolds Lighting & Audio Design handled this expansion seamlessly, as such additional requests are common during projects. Tanek Hood, manager of the company's lighting and audio design division, emphasized the meticulous approach to system design, which includes optimizing the number, placement, and directionality of light fixtures and speakers. Hood, whose background in photography influenced his lighting design philosophy, uses tools like Photoshop and Illustrator for project planning and documentation.
The Coastal Source lighting system provides custom ambiance through dimming capabilities and zone control, while the speakers deliver immersive sound without disturbing neighbors. The design incorporated a variety of Coastal Source fixtures, including uplights for the home, trees, and landscape features, integrated deck lights for fence gates, LED tiki torches, and path lights along walkways. Notably, mounted downlights on trees provide comprehensive light coverage for the skate park. The selection of Coastal Source products was driven by their high-end appearance, performance, and ruggedness, essential for the coastal environment where the property is located. The discreet placement of fixtures and speakers, such as the 10.0 Ellipse Bollard speaker, 10.0 Bollard subwoofer, and MR11 Bullet Lights, ensures that the natural outdoor setting is preserved.
Reynolds Lighting & Audio Design exclusively specifies Coastal Source outdoor audio and lighting solutions due to their reputation for durability, particularly in harsh conditions like saltwater spray, humid summers, and snowy winters. Hood cited instances where Coastal Source products withstood flooding with saltwater without any adverse effects. The brand's risers also offer design flexibility, allowing for easy adjustments to ground light fixtures for seasonal changes or new landscape features. The system is designed for ease of use, integrating Lutron and Sonos wireless systems for control via mobile devices. Special features include a dedicated lighting and speaker setup with a physical switch in the shower pavilion and a three-zone audio system with localized volume control, providing flexibility for the family to manage sound in different areas of the yard. Franco D’Ascanio, Founder & CEO of Coastal Source, underscored how projects like the 'Skate Park House' exemplify the superior experiences and flawless performance offered by their products.
