inga sempé sheds new light on the clamp lamp for wästberg
Inga Sempé introduces her latest lighting design, the ‘Sempé W153’ clamp lamp, developed for Wästberg and unveiled at the 2015 Stockholm Furniture Fair. This innovative design aims to elevate the traditional clamp lamp typology, which Sempé notes often appears awkward and unstable when not clamped. The ‘Sempé W153’ addresses this by offering a multi-purpose lighting solution that seamlessly transitions between various placements without compromising its aesthetic or functionality.
The core concept behind the ‘Sempé W153’ is its versatility. While retaining its primary function as a clamp lamp, it is ingeniously designed to stand independently on a flat surface or be mounted on a wall. This adaptability ensures that the lamp remains a coherent and integrated element in any setting, regardless of whether it is clamped, standing, or wall-mounted. Sempé drew inspiration from the utilitarian clamp lamps of her childhood, which were widely available and celebrated for their practicality, though often lacked standalone elegance.
Each ‘Sempé W153’ lamp is equipped with a high-quality, energy-efficient LED light source, underscoring a commitment to modern lighting standards. A distinctive feature of the design is its adjustable shade, which is held in place by a magnet construction. This magnetic attachment allows users to effortlessly rotate and position the diffusing cover, directing light precisely where needed. This mechanism enhances user experience by providing smooth and intuitive control over the light's direction.
Sempé explains that her intention was to transform the basic clamp lamp into a more sophisticated and versatile object. She noted that traditional clamp lamps, much like folding chairs, often lack the perceived status of their more conventional counterparts due to their specialized use and awkward appearance when not fulfilling their primary function. By integrating a flat base and wall-mounting capability, the ‘Sempé W153’ transcends these limitations, offering a comprehensive lighting solution that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing in multiple scenarios. The design pays homage to the simplicity and effectiveness of older clamp lamps while bringing a contemporary sensibility and expanded usability to the product category.
The design process focused on overcoming the inherent 'infirm' appearance of clamp lamps when not attached, ensuring that the W153 is self-sufficient and balanced in any configuration. This multi-functional approach aims to grant the clamp lamp a renewed status as a highly useful and adaptable lighting fixture for various home and office environments. The lamp's presentation at the Stockholm Furniture Fair highlighted its innovative features and its potential to redefine perceptions of this classic lighting type.
