Vaarnii's Pine Veneer Pendant Lamps
Finnish furniture company Vaarnii has launched a new series of pendant lamps, the Hans Pendant series, drawing inspiration from the techniques of Swedish industrial designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson. Jakobsson, prominent in the mid-20th century, was known for his pioneering use of wood veneers in lighting designs. Vaarnii, which primarily uses locally-sourced pine for its products, has adopted this method to create a lighting collection that diverges from its typically chunky and Brutalist aesthetic.
The Hans Pendant series reintroduces designs originally conceived by Jakobsson, which had been off the market for decades. Vaarnii has re-engineered three of Jakobsson's original pendant designs, utilizing solid Finnish pine in conjunction with circular strips of high-quality pine veneer. This approach efficiently uses pine, highlighting its natural tone and grain to create designs that appear substantial yet maintain a visual lightness.
The collection comprises three distinct pendant lamp models, each named with a numerical identifier and indicating its diameter in centimeters. The 1001 Hans Pendant 38 features a beehive profile, offering a distinctive shape. The 1002 Hans Pendant, characterized by an ovoid profile, is available in two sizes: a standard 46 cm and a larger XL 70 cm. Lastly, the 1003 Hans Pendant presents a diamond profile and is offered in a 60 cm version and an XL 90 cm size.
A key characteristic of these lamps is their inherent individuality. Due to the natural variations in the pine veneer, each lamp possesses a unique appearance. Furthermore, the company highlights that the color of each lamp will evolve and change over time as the pine ages, adding another layer of distinctiveness to each piece. This natural aging process ensures that no two lamps will remain identical, contributing to their unique charm and character as they become part of a living space.
Vaarnii's decision to revive Jakobsson's techniques underscores a commitment to sustainable material use and a blend of historical design principles with contemporary production. The focus on local Finnish pine not only aligns with the company's brand identity but also supports responsible sourcing. The re-engineering process demonstrates an effort to bring classic designs back to the market while adapting them to modern manufacturing capabilities and aesthetic sensibilities, ensuring their relevance and appeal to a new generation of consumers interested in authentic and well-crafted home furnishings.
