How to make a picture frame Christmas Card display
Sustainable interior designer and stylist, Lynne Lambourne, has provided a six-step tutorial for creating a Christmas card display using an old picture frame. This DIY project is presented in collaboration with the British Heart Foundation's (BHF) 'Charity Shop Challenge,' which encourages individuals to purchase preloved gifts from charity shops to support the BHF's fundraising efforts, especially given the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on their income. The BHF offers various vintage and antique homewares suitable for upcycling, aligning with the project's sustainable approach.
The project is designed to be a quick and easy Christmas craft, serving as both a festive centrepiece and a practical way to display cards and notes from loved ones. The required materials include a picture frame, chalk paint, sandpaper, wax polish, a cotton cloth, a staple gun, string (such as twine), pegs, and Christmas cards. The first step involves finding a suitable old picture frame, preferably a large one, and carefully removing any existing glass. Lynne Lambourne suggests looking for frames without glass at BHF home stores.
The second step focuses on cleaning the frame and applying paint. Lynne recommends using Annie Sloan Old White as a base layer, followed by a top coat of Aubusson Blue to achieve a vintage aesthetic that contrasts with wall colours. After both layers of paint are thoroughly dry, the third step involves using sandpaper on the frame's edges to reveal the white base layer, thereby creating an aged, vintage look. The fourth step requires waxing the frame to seal the paint and provide protection. Lynne advises brushing on the wax with a paintbrush and then buffing it with an old cotton cloth to add shine.
The fifth step involves attaching string to the back of the frame using a staple gun. It is crucial to ensure the string is pulled very tight to prevent sagging once cards or notes are attached. Pegs are then added to the string to hold the cards in place. Finally, in the sixth step, the completed picture frame display can be hung on a wall or rested on a desk. The article also suggests decorating the display with additional foliage for an enhanced festive touch. After the Christmas season, the frame can be repurposed as a stylish display for photographs or letters throughout the year, promoting its versatility and longevity.
