9 Inspiring Fabric and Wallcovering Trends You Should Know Now

Every January, designers and editors travel to Paris for the annual Déco Off trade show, where textile houses introduce their latest fabric and wallcovering collections, setting the trends for the coming year. For 2023, the prevailing mood is positive, characterized by vibrant colors and expressive patterns. The exhibition highlights a clear influence of travel, with creative directors drawing inspiration from diverse global destinations ranging from Japan to the American West. Additionally, a strong theme of historical revival is evident, with many companies incorporating old-world forest motifs inspired by medieval tapestries and mythical flora and fauna. One significant trend is "Japan Wanderlust," where fabric houses like Manuel Canovas and Jim Thompson showcase small-scale floral patterns and traditional cloud motifs, respectively, reflecting Japanese aesthetics. "Forest Green" continues to be a prominent color, appearing widely across new collections, such as the Aspen Glamour embroidered performance trim by Perennials for Samuel & Sons. Another notable trend is the resurgence of "Checks," a graphic pattern seen in items like the colorful Child’s Check wallpaper by Christopher Farr Cloth, designed in association with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, and a reversible wool Union Square pattern by Pollack. "Fringe" is making a statement, with companies like Pollack introducing whimsical striped fabrics like Trim and Proper, and Élitis featuring patterns such as Laredo, emphasizing its use for curtains and chair backs. "Trompe-l’Oeil Architectural Details" also capture attention, exemplified by Élitis's Rayures Jumelles, a ribbed 3D wallcovering inspired by Greek columns that mimics plaster with a soft velvet feel. Lori Weitzner's Forest Bathing collection also offers faux plaster wallcovering tiles made of paper. The timeless appeal of "Tapestries" is reinterpreted with a focus on old-world forest patterns. Arte's Les Forets wallcovering and Nobilis's new moire-like fabric in vibrant colorways reflect this trend. The "Western Promises" trend is inspired by the American Southwest and Mexico, with Perennials collaborating with Liz Lambert for the Far West collection, and Élitis presenting Mexican Otomi animal-embroidered fabric. "Folkloric Figures" also emerge, featuring mythological creatures and shapes in designs like Jim Thompson’s Fauna and Fungi, which includes woodland animals and plants, and Pollack’s Greta design, with its folkloric florals. Finally, "Creative Stripes" offer a fresh take on a classic pattern. Designers are reinventing stripes with details like scalloped edges, as seen in Sanderson’s Pinetum stripe and Dedar’s Voulez-Vous pattern. Overall, the 2023 fabric and wallcovering trends emphasize a blend of global influences, historical reverence, textural innovation, and playful patterns, offering a rich palette for decorators and designers. #FabricTrends #WallcoveringTrends #DécoOff #InteriorDesign #TextileDesign #HomeDecor #DesignInspiration #GlobalInfluences #PatternTrends #FabricTrends #WallcoveringTrends #DécoOff #InteriorDesign #TextileDesign #HomeDecor #DesignInspiration #GlobalInfluences #PatternTrends
