Former Block contestant Jenna Densten shows how to restore an old table using oven cleaner
Former Block contestant Jenna Densten, alongside her husband Josh, has embarked on a renovation journey of an old property in country Victoria. As part of this extensive project, which involves converting a shed into their temporary residence and planning for their main home, Jenna recently shared a DIY tutorial on restoring an old hall table. This vintage furniture piece, currently used in their temporary shed home, possessed attractive scalloped edges but was marred by an undesirable orange varnish.
To address the varnish, Jenna initiated a restoration process outdoors in a well-ventilated area. She equipped herself with two cans of heavy-duty oven cleaner, protective gloves, a mask, and a pressure washer. The first step involved carefully removing the old drawer handles, which were slated for replacement. With her protective gear in place, Jenna proceeded to apply the oven cleaner evenly across the table's surface. After allowing it to sit for approximately 20 minutes, she thoroughly hosed off the cleaner. This application and rinsing process was then repeated to ensure effective varnish removal.
Following the two rounds of oven cleaner application and sufficient drying time, Jenna lightly sanded the table. She then attached new drawer handles, giving the piece a refreshed look. The newly restored table was subsequently moved into the shed home, where Jenna's daughter, Story, assisted in styling it. The table was adorned with various decorative items, including artwork, a book, a plant, an urn, and a semi-circle-shaped vase.
Jenna opted to leave the restored hall table with a raw finish, choosing not to apply any new varnish, as it functions as a hall table. She noted that for those who wish to seal furniture while preserving a matte and natural aesthetic, Osmo oil would be her recommended choice. The outcome of the restoration was a table that exuded character and warmth, successfully eliminating the unwanted orange hue.
Josh and Jenna's move to Rutherglen, Victoria, in late 2021 was driven by a desire for a lifestyle change, relocating from inner-city Melbourne. Their country property, affectionately termed "The Castle House," is undergoing renovation to align with their vision of a simpler life. Jenna expressed her enthusiasm for incorporating color in a playful yet sympathetic manner, respecting the heritage home's high ceilings and ornate details. Although renovations have commenced, the couple has encountered delays, particularly in obtaining council approval for the roof. Josh and Jenna's previous experience on The Block includes their participation in the 2011 season and a return for the All Stars season in 2013.
