The Luxury Home: A kitchen renovation in Sarasota’s Harbor Acres.
In Sarasota's exclusive Harbor Acres, a brand-new custom residence showcases a kitchen renovation that successfully blends traditional design with modern sensibilities. The homeowners sought a kitchen that subtly hints at classic aesthetics without overwhelming the space, a trend increasingly popular, as noted by David Asher of Eurotech Cabinetry. Asher emphasizes that contemporary traditional design prioritizes cleaner, simpler finishes and details, moving away from the elaborate, multi-stepped finishes and abundant ornamentation seen in past eras.
The kitchen, spanning 350 square feet, was meticulously designed by Asher, his colleague Tracey Scalzo (a certified master kitchen and bath designer), and interior designer Gail Carlson. The design eschews heavy or overly ornamented elements, opting for a crisp and clean traditional aesthetic. Noteworthy details include the restrained elegance of fretwork valances above the window and on the island's open shelves. The cream-colored antiquing glaze applied to the cabinets is subtly brushed, providing just enough visual interest without being excessive, a point highlighted by Scalzo, who cautions against overdoing such design features.
Key elements of the kitchen's style include Eurotech's private label American Estate maple cabinets. These cabinets feature inset doors with recessed panels and applied molding, alongside exposed, oil-rubbed bronze hinges, contributing to a classic appearance. Mullioned glass doors on the cabinets above the sink and decorative bun feet on the island enhance the furniture-like quality of the cabinetry. Scalzo explains that this precise craftsmanship, typical of traditional cabinet-making, adds to the cost but delivers an authentic look.
The kitchen is also a functional dream for a home chef. A prominent 60-inch-long Wolf dual-fuel range, featuring six gas burners and two electric ovens, serves as the focal point. This is the only appliance openly displayed, as the designers deliberately concealed other major appliances to maintain a non-kitchen-like appearance, especially given the kitchen's open-plan connection to the great room. The refrigerator is integrated into a tall bank of cabinets to the left of the sink, the dishwasher is positioned to the right of the sink, and the microwave and warming drawer are discreetly tucked into the island.
Further contributing to the traditional yet refined design are the spacious farmhouse sink and oil-rubbed bronze faucets, which offer classic appeal without excessive frills. Interior designer Gail Carlson introduced a graphic element through geometric-patterned stool cushions, colored in a blend of teal and soft sea-glass blue. The dramatic light fixtures, with their old iron finish and antique cut glass framework, add a subtle sparkle to the room, enhancing the overall sophisticated ambiance of the renovated kitchen.
The project involved collaboration with several local businesses. Eurotech Cabinetry, located at 1609 DeSoto Road, Sarasota, provided the custom cabinetry. Gail Carlson Interiors, at 1517 State St., No. 101, Sarasota, was responsible for the interior design. European Marble, at 1820 N. Lime Ave., Sarasota, supplied the countertops, and La Casa Tile & Stone, at 1777 Northgate Blvd., Sarasota, furnished the tile backsplash. This renovation exemplifies a thoughtful approach to traditional design, emphasizing clean lines, subtle detailing, and integrated functionality within a luxurious setting.
