We’ve All Seen House Tours Filled With Impractical Pieces, but Interior Designer Michelle R. Smith Is Still Betting on Utility
Interior designer Michelle R. Smith, known for her ability to blend diverse styles and create expansive, meticulously curated spaces, has launched her debut flatweave rug collaboration with Nordic Knots. Smith and Liza Laserow Berglund, co-founder of the Scandinavian textile maker, first connected over a decade ago in New York while working in a shared office space. Berglund was then an interior designer and antiques dealer, and Smith was in the early stages of establishing Studio MRS. This collaboration features four distinct rugs, comprising three flatweaves and one all-natural jute rug. Each piece reflects Smith’s signature aesthetic, characterized by breezy, neutrals-focused palettes and the use of natural fibers. A notable inspiration for the collection was an 1980s vintage Esprit pocket square, which informed a trompe l’œil pattern now integrated into the rug designs.
Smith describes her design ethos as "Quiet. Thoughtful. Tailored." The genesis of this collection lies in the concept of vintage pocket squares, aiming to create rugs that possess personality without dominating a room. These rugs are designed to be subtle, flexible, and layered, seamlessly integrating into various spaces without requiring excessive consideration. Smith's approach to color gravitates towards understated tones such as sludge greens, dusty blues, khakis, and browns, which she views as functional neutrals with a distinct character. Many of these palettes are derived from fabrics previously used in her client projects. When it comes to patterns, Smith favors small, repetitive motifs, employing AutoCAD for precision in her mathematical design process. She cites old-school men’s suiting, with its tiny motifs and simple repeats, as a clear reference point, alongside the work of Madeleine Castaing and Jacques Grange, whose spaces often featured busy, small-scale wall-to-wall carpets that felt surprisingly understated within their environments.
The collaborative relationship with Liza Laserow Berglund, stemming from their early career days in a shared workspace, proved instrumental. Smith reflects on this period as a time of mutual support and shared learning. The rugs are designed for versatility and adaptability, initially conceived for rooms in Smith's Bellport home, they demonstrated their ability to function effectively in different settings, including a project in Montauk. This adaptability underscores their intended utility, much like a pocket square that complements various outfits. The choice of flatweave was driven by its inherent utility and unpretentious nature. Flatweave rugs are practical for high-traffic areas, can be placed under dining tables, or layered over other textiles like sisal, without demanding undue attention or appearing overly precious. The mood board for the collection included diverse elements such as an unusually patterned favorite bowl, Polaroids of family and friends by the pool to evoke a family-friendly atmosphere suitable for daily life, and a curated selection of client fabrics that formed the basis of the color story. Smith is currently based in New York after five years in New Orleans and is engaged in several historical projects. Her focus remains on creating intuitive interiors and designs that offer lasting appeal and functionality.
