EMKO uses linen offcuts to create vibrant confetti pattern of Chaos rug
The Lithuanian design brand EMKO has collaborated with a local textile factory to produce the Chaos rug, an innovative homeware item that repurposes leftover linen yarns. The rug, designed by EMKO's creative director Audrone Drungilaite, aims to introduce a sense of 'chaos' and playfulness into contemporary interiors while addressing textile waste. The design features a confetti-like pattern created by embedding multicoloured linen offcuts into a plain brown or navy blue base.
The offcuts, which are typically not suitable for mass production or cost-effectively recycled into new yarn due to their small size and the nature of linen fibers, are sourced from a family-run textile factory in Panevėžys. Drungilaite recognized the potential in these varied and abundant waste materials, transforming a practical limitation into a unique aesthetic. The production process involves hand-tufting, where weavers are given a degree of improvisation in selecting yarns from seven designated color groups, ensuring each rug has a unique color range while maintaining a consistent overall visual language.
This approach not only minimizes waste but also highlights the importance of circular resource use and sustainable design practices. The varying availability of offcuts means that no two Chaos rugs are exactly alike, adding to their individual character. Beyond its aesthetic appeal and sustainable credentials, the project seeks to support and revitalize the local linen production and flax cultivation traditions in Lithuania, which have seen a significant decline since the country joined the European Union in 2004.
EMKO actively collaborates with small and medium-sized Lithuanian enterprises to manufacture its products, thereby contributing to the local economy and preserving traditional crafts. The Chaos rug has been recognized for its innovative design and sustainability efforts, being shortlisted for the Dezeen Awards in the homeware design category. The product represents a fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern design principles, advocating for a more responsible and resource-efficient approach to manufacturing.
