Rethinking dining room layout and creating a cozy bar
This article details a home redesign project in Wayland, where a family living in a woodsy setting desired a beachy aesthetic. The core of the redesign involved reconfiguring the layout of a Cape-style home, specifically addressing a large dining room and a cramped kitchen. Diana Pauro, founder of Rebel Builders, was enlisted for the project. Pauro's solution was to relocate the kitchen into the larger dining room, creating ample space for an island that would serve as a central gathering point for family and friends, reflecting the husband's enjoyment of cooking for others. The former kitchen space was then transformed into a cozy bar area, imbued with a coastal feel, fulfilling the homeowners' wish for a 'beach house in the woods' despite their actual environment. The design choices for the new bar area emphasize a relaxed, beach-inspired atmosphere. Key elements selected for the space include an ivory bouclé sofa with stainless steel legs from Room & Board, chosen for its clean lines and laidback appeal over more formal leather. The walls are adorned with Pierre Frey wallcovering, featuring stylized waves on a metallic raffia ground, contributing to the beachy, cozy, and calming ambiance. Small, yet impactful, accents like Cedar & Moss ribbed-porcelain sconces flank the sofa, offering a textural contrast with their raw and glazed finishes. Oak cabinetry, designed to complement the natural woodsy surroundings, extends across an entire wall, with appliances cleverly concealed to maintain a serene atmosphere. The illuminated glassware cabinet mirrors a lighted wine refrigerator, enhancing the bar's appeal. Hardware selections, such as knurled brass vertical appliance pulls on the glassware cabinet, were chosen for both their functionality and their nautical aesthetic, ensuring symmetry. To balance the seating area, velvet barrel chairs that extend to the floor were paired with the legged sofa. A natural woven rug with black binding and stripes was incorporated to define the seating area without blending into the overall monochromatic scheme, adding subtle detail and grounding the space. The redesign successfully integrated the homeowners' desire for a coastal vibe within their woodland home through thoughtful layout changes and specific material and furniture selections.
