Wonho Lee creates Brise fan and side table that blends into the home
The Brise fan, a design by Hongik University graduate Wonho Lee, integrates an electric fan into a minimalist side table. This innovative design addresses the issue of space constraints in modern homes, particularly single-person residences, where traditional fans are often deemed impractical due to their seasonal use and tendency to collect dust when not in operation. Lee's concept aims to provide a functional appliance that maintains utility and aesthetic appeal throughout the year.
The Brise unit features a round table with a Douglas fir wood top, beneath which the electric fan mechanism is concealed. Air is drawn into the unit from its bottom and then propelled upwards and outwards. A key element of the design is the curved wooden component at the top, which effectively disperses the air in all directions. This engineered airflow is intended to mimic a "natural breeze," offering both light cooling and enhanced ventilation within a room.
The inspiration for Brise emerged from observations of contemporary living habits, where many individuals opt for air conditioning over electric fans. This preference is often driven by concerns about space efficiency and the visual clutter caused by appliances that are only used for a portion of the year. Lee recognized the environmental implications of frequently discarding or underutilizing such items, leading him to conceptualize a product that offers continuous value and reduces waste.
The prototype of Brise is constructed from a combination of CNC-machined Douglas fir wood, laser-cut aluminium, stainless steel, and spray-painted acrylic. The circular white body of the table houses the internal fan system. The design not only serves a practical function as a side table but also enhances the overall usability of the fan by integrating it seamlessly into a piece of furniture. A dial on the unit allows users to select from three different power levels, adjusting the intensity of the airflow.
Lee's academic background includes studies in electronic engineering prior to his design degree at Hongik University, which likely contributed to the technical sophistication of the Brise design. The project was first exhibited in January 2020 and subsequently received recognition, being shortlisted in the furniture category of the 2021 Dezeen Awards. This acknowledgment highlights its innovative approach to product design, emphasizing sustainability through multifunctional integration. The Brise fan-table offers a solution for compact living spaces, providing a year-round functional piece of furniture that subtly improves indoor air circulation and temperature without compromising on aesthetics or spatial efficiency.
