We Tested the DeLonghi Space Heater and Love Its Soft, Radiant Heat
The DeLonghi space heater, a 1500-watt corded unit, is recognized for its energy efficiency, converting 100% of electricity into heat upon activation. This makes it a top performer in energy consumption among tested space heaters. Its design allows for versatile placement, either wall-mounted or on wheels, accommodating various room setups. However, safety precautions advise against its use in areas prone to moisture, such as laundry rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, or near flammable materials in storage areas.
The heater operates silently due to the absence of an oscillating fan. It features a straightforward control system with minimum and maximum settings, alongside a knob offering six heat levels. Although lacking an integrated cord management system, the wheelbase can serve as a practical solution for cord storage. The wheels are noted for their smooth movement and stability, providing confidence against accidental tipping. An internal tip-over switch further enhances safety by automatically shutting off the device if it overturns.
Testing involved using the DeLonghi space heater in a 169-square-foot bedroom for three-hour intervals. Temperature readings were taken at the beginning, midway, and end of each test, covering both the room's center and a far corner. The heater's quick warming capability was a significant finding; on a low setting, the room temperature increased by 6 degrees Fahrenheit in 90 minutes, while on a high setting, it rose by 12 degrees Fahrenheit within the same timeframe. The heat emitted is described as soft, gentle, and radiant, warming surfaces rather than blowing dry air, which contributes to a cozy atmosphere and avoids the drying effect often associated with fan-based heaters. The unit’s face remains dark during operation, preventing distracting hot red coils, and its exterior stays relatively cool to the touch.
A notable drawback identified during testing is the manual thermostat, which requires users to physically turn a knob to the desired temperature until a click is heard, rather than offering a more intuitive digital control. Despite this, the heater is praised for its immediate heat output, soft radiant warmth, dual placement options, silent operation, and affordability, along with ease of mobility.
DeLonghi offers a range of heating products, including ceramic tower heaters, compact capsule heaters, convection heaters, and radiator space heaters. The Mica panel heater specifically tested leverages electric heating without a fan to radiate gentle heat. Another product, DeLonghi’s Comfort Temp Full Room Radiant Heater, is an oil-filled radiator that also provides gentle heat, featuring a modern design, an adjustable thermostat, and a ComfortTemp setting for efficiency. For those seeking a more traditional option, a ceramic digital tower heater made with recycled plastic functions as both a space heater and a fan, similar to Dyson models, with an easy-to-read digital display and remote control. The DeLonghi Mica Panel Heater is highly recommended for its energy efficiency, ease of use, portability, and ability to quickly warm a room, and is available for purchase directly from the DeLonghi website, Wayfair, and Amazon. The heater uses micathermic technology to convert 100% of electricity into heat, maximizing energy usage without waste. Operation is simple, with two knobs for power and temperature adjustment.
