We Tested (and Rated!) Every Bed at Crate & Barrel
The article details a comprehensive in-person review of five bed frames displayed at Crate & Barrel's Manhattan store, conducted by Apartment Therapy editors Emma Dangel and Cullen Ormond. The evaluation aimed to assist consumers in making informed decisions about bed frame upgrades, emphasizing that a bed is a room's focal point and a crucial element for rest and recharge. Crate & Barrel, a popular home furniture brand known for its neutral aesthetics and timeless designs, was chosen for this "Personal Shopper" series due to its reputation as a middle-tier retailer offering quality above budget brands but below high-end designer stores. The brand is also recognized for its diverse range of home furnishings, including seating, rugs, dinnerware, bedding, and decor.
The beds were assessed based on seven key criteria: customizability (varieties, colors, finishes, materials, sizes, box spring necessity), space needs (bulkiness, canopy, width), platform height (ease of entry/exit), storage capacity (drawers, under-bed space, headboard storage), appearance (decor style suitability, design aesthetic), sturdiness (material quality, stability), and assembly (tool requirement, ease of disassembly). Each bed received a detailed review from either Emma Dangel, Style Editor, or Cullen Ormond, Associate Home Editor, both experienced in design and home products.
Among the beds reviewed, the Lafayette Upholstered Bed was highlighted as the "Best Upholstered" option, noted for its striking curved, winged headboard and affordability at $1,699. It offers versatility in style, three neutral color options (mist grey, charcoal, natural beige), and seven inches of under-bed clearance, with an additional storage option featuring three drawers. Despite minor wobbling, it was praised for its value and range of sizing options. The Linea Teak Wood Bed was designated "Best Wood" for its solid teak construction, modern silhouette, and durability, priced at $1,899. Available in natural and black finishes, it offers eight inches of under-bed clearance but is less customizable. The Milano Wood Upholstered Bed, at $1,999, earned "Best Design" for its mid-century modern aesthetic, combining dark walnut wood with a bouclé headboard. It features rounded corners and a low profile with no under-bed storage but offers an option for attached nightstands, though the bouclé fabric was noted for potential cleaning difficulties and less timeless appeal. The Keane Wood Upholstered Bed, priced at $2,099, was named "Best Neutral" due to its wood and fabric combination, high stature, and ten inches of under-bed clearance. While its wood finish appeared somewhat processed, it provides a neutral, high-end look and comes in various styles including all wood, leather, and canopy options. Finally, the Arden Upholstered Storage Bed, the most expensive at $2,898, was lauded as the "Best Storage" bed. It features a tall, winged headboard, three spacious storage drawers, and an extensive selection of nearly 300 fabric options, combining high style with functionality.
