We Found Air Mattresses Your House Guests Will Actually Enjoy Sleeping On

This article details the comprehensive testing and evaluation process undertaken by the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab to identify the best air mattresses available. Thirteen different models were rigorously assessed for various performance metrics, including overnight leakage, indentation over time, puncture resistance, and bursting strength. In addition to laboratory tests, consumer testers were enlisted to provide real-world feedback on comfort and ease of use after sleeping on the mattresses at home. The SoundAsleep Dream Series Air Mattress is recognized as the 'Best Overall' for its comfort, support from 40 air coils, grippy bottom, and a built-in pump with automatic shut-off. Its 19-inch height was appreciated by testers for easy ingress and egress, and its waterproof flocked material kept sheets in place. While generally highly rated, some online reviewers reported minor deflation over time. The Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort Air Mattress is highlighted as the 'Best Value,' offering a low price without compromising on essential features. It supports up to 600 pounds, making it suitable for two people, and inflates in approximately four and a half minutes. Experts praised its substantial feel and the generous 22-inch height, which prevented users from feeling too close to the floor. The main drawback identified was a lengthy deflation process. The Serta Raised Air Mattress with Never Flat Pump earned the 'Best Dual-Pump' distinction due to its innovative two-pump system. The primary pump handles inflation and deflation with auto-shutoff, while a secondary pump continuously monitors and adjusts air pressure throughout the night to prevent sagging. This model excelled in puncture resistance tests and offered fast inflation and deflation times. Testers could select from three preset firmness levels, although some noted the mattress could be noisy when shared. For 'Most Comfortable,' the King Koil Luxury Raised Air Mattress was chosen for its air coil support, built-in pump with quick inflation, and flocked material on top and sides for comfort and sheet retention. Available in multiple heights, it received positive feedback from testers regarding comfort and ease of setup, including a convenient cord storage compartment. However, customer service issues were noted during testing, suggesting direct phone contact for support. The article also briefly mentions two other air mattresses for specific uses: the Coleman Double-High SupportRest Air Bed for camping and The Shrunks Travel Bed for children, emphasizing their unique advantages and limitations. The testing methodology involved timing inflation and deflation, assessing ease of setup and packing, measuring overnight leakage by simulating human weight, and evaluating sagging and indentation. Bursting strength and puncture resistance were scientifically measured using specialized machinery. Comfort was evaluated by both lab experts and consumer testers, who provided detailed feedback through surveys on various aspects from noise levels to support and overall satisfaction. A shopping guide advises consumers to consider pump type, inflation time, air chamber design (vertical coils vs. horizontal beams), and flocked fabric for comfort and stability. Taller air mattresses are generally preferred for comfort and ease of use, though they may be less convenient for portability. Practical tips are also provided for fixing leaks and maintaining the air mattress, including proper inflation, careful deflation, and avoiding sharp objects or heat sources during setup.
