This Tricked-Out Kids’ Bed Is the Reason We Worship Built-In Storage
The article details how Laurel and Nick Gallucci, founders of Sweet Laurel Bakery, designed their son Nico’s bedroom in their 1950s Los Angeles cottage. Having moved from a one-bedroom apartment, they embarked on a renovation that included vaulting the ceiling for natural light and creating a highly functional children's room. A key feature of Nico’s room is a custom-built bunk bed, designed by Nick, a sustainability engineer, and local carpenter Bryan Lau. This built-in structure is integrated directly into the wall studs and includes clever storage solutions such as hidden drawers within the steps and a large compartment at the bottom that can function as a trundle bed or additional storage. The bunk bed was designed with the future in mind, as the couple discovered they were expecting their second child during the remodel, necessitating a space that could accommodate multiple children, a concept Laurel, as the eldest of seven, strongly embraced.
Laurel collaborated with her business partner, designer Claire Thomas, to complete the room's aesthetic and functionality. They prioritized long-term storage, expanding Nico’s closet into a deep nook with child-height clothing rods, a shoe organizer, and ample upper shelves. This strategic use of space freed up the floor area, making way for the bunk bed’s storage stairs. The drawers within the stairs are currently used for Nico’s books and toys, with several top drawers intentionally left empty to accommodate the new baby's belongings.
For the room's decor, they chose a classic and playful style, incorporating Victorian-esque floral wallpaper, inspired by Laurel’s love for rose gardens and afternoon tea. This wallpaper provided a fitting backdrop for an antique yellow sofa, the first furniture piece Laurel and Nick purchased together. The sofa was reupholstered in a durable, easy-to-clean, suede-like fabric, blending the antique charm with child-friendly practicality. The design creates a whimsical, woodland atmosphere that Nico particularly enjoys, often pointing out the birds in the wallpaper.
The couple also integrated advanced, practical features into their home. Nick, with his engineering background, worked with architect Hamilton Tyni to install sophisticated systems, such as individual HVAC units for each room to optimize energy efficiency and electric car chargers on their corner lot, anticipating future needs. In Nico's room specifically, a hidden light switch under the top bunk allows him to easily turn on his reading lamp without leaving his bed. These thoughtful details throughout the house exemplify their commitment to both functionality and a low carbon footprint, ensuring the home is not only livable but also prepared for the future, making the children's room a versatile and enduring space.
