This Three-Story Home in the Catskills Is Modeled After a Watchtower

Austin Griffith, the owner of Hudson Lookout, envisioned his unique property as an ideal listing for Airbnb, where unconventional houses garner significant attention. Collaborating with architect Kimberly Peck, Griffith developed a modern watchtower concept for his home nestled in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The design aimed to maximize views and create a distinctive retreat. Griffith, who spent his childhood exploring the outdoors in Michigan, developed a strong connection to southeastern New York's natural landscapes. He began searching for property in the area around 2015, eventually purchasing a two-acre wooded parcel with existing amenities like a well. He discovered that the land previously hosted a resort in the sixties, inspiring him to continue its special history. Hudson Lookout is designed as a three-story residence, with the first two floors dedicated to bedrooms. The third floor houses shared living spaces, offering expansive views of the surrounding natural scenery. A welcoming roof deck, complete with a telescope, provides an opportunity for stargazing. The home's layout emphasizes panoramic vistas, with a central staircase that eliminates the need for long hallways, thereby maximizing window space on each floor. The main living area is furnished with a Floyd sofa and midcentury leather lounge chairs from Poly & Bark, creating a comfortable and stylish ambiance. A gas fireplace in the dining area also functions as a movie projection space, enhancing the entertainment options for guests. The two-bedroom home, while modest in size, is well-equipped for both short and long stays. The kitchen features an induction cooktop, catering to modern culinary needs. Additional amenities include heated terrazzo floors and a deep soaking tub in the primary bedroom suite, offering a luxurious and comfortable experience. The primary bedroom's picture window frames views of the Hudson Valley and The Berkshires across the river, creating a serene and picturesque environment. The deep soaking tub and rain shower in the primary bedroom suite also overlook the woods, allowing for a private connection with nature. Griffith highlights the home's appeal for relaxation and connecting with nature, noting that deer and other wildlife are routinely seen grazing nearby. Guests can enjoy cooking meals, watching movies with the projector, or simply relaxing by the fire. He expresses satisfaction with the project's evolution from a laptop file to a tangible home, emphasizing the positive feedback from visitors who describe the view as a painting and express a desire to return. The article also references Dwell's contest to find a must-visit Airbnb listing, indicating Hudson Lookout's success in this competition and providing information on becoming an Airbnb host. #HudsonLookout #CatskillMountains #Airbnb #ModernWatchtower #ArchitecturalDesign #VacationRental #OutdoorLiving #HomeTours #HudsonLookout #CatskillMountains #Airbnb #ModernWatchtower #ArchitecturalDesign #VacationRental #OutdoorLiving #HomeTours
