This futuristic wall lamp by From Lighting is surprisingly simple
From Lighting, an independent brand specializing in innovative illumination solutions, has introduced Piazza, a magnetic wall lamp designed for versatility and aesthetic impact. Co-founded by industrial designers Tobias Nitsche and Cesare Bizzotto, From Lighting emphasizes deep technological research, a poetic approach, rigorous aesthetics, and meticulous attention to detail in its product development. The Piazza lamp exemplifies these principles, offering a user-friendly yet visually striking lighting fixture.
The core functionality of the Piazza lamp lies in its magnetic design. The lamp features heads that can rotate 360 degrees, allowing users to direct light precisely where needed. This flexibility is achieved through a magnetic, powder-coated steel base, which was developed in-house, alongside a die-cast aluminum shell. The magnetic attachment enables the lamp to be moved freely and easily across a metal board surface, adapting to various lighting requirements within a space.
Tobias Nitsche highlights that the lamp head, measuring 16 by 16 cm, is the central element of the design. This flat panel houses the LED light source, giving the lamp a contemporary appearance reminiscent of an electronic device, such as an iPad or a TV screen, rather than a traditional light fixture. This design choice contributes to its futuristic aesthetic and distinguishes it from conventional wall lamps. The Piazza lamp is available in two configurations: a linear version and a circular version. Both variations are suitable for providing ambient lighting for tasks like reading or working, showcasing their adaptability to different environments and user preferences.
Sustainability is a key value for From Lighting, as articulated by Nitsche. The primary components of the Piazza lamp are made from aluminum, a material known for its recyclability. The company is committed to using eco-friendly packaging and recyclable materials throughout its production process. Furthermore, From Lighting aims to create durable products that customers will retain for an extended period, thereby promoting longevity and reducing waste. This focus on sustainability is integral to the brand's ethos and product development.
The design of the Piazza lamp is characterized by its minimal yet impactful appearance, contributing significant sculptural presence to any architectural setting. Nitsche notes that the abstract aesthetic of the lamp head, devoid of a classic light bulb or lampshade, reinforces its modern and technological identity. This tech-inspired look is intentionally contrasted with the human interaction involved in manually adjusting the lamp's position. This interplay between advanced technology and intuitive user experience is a defining feature of the Piazza lamp, making it both functional and a distinctive design element.
