This Company Behind Epic IKEA Kitchen Hacks Is Launching Its Own Cabinet Line
Semihandmade, a California-based company known for elevating IKEA cabinet boxes with designer doors and panels, has announced the launch of its own original cabinet line, Semihandmade Cabinets. Since its founding in 2011, Semihandmade has transformed over 40,000 kitchens, bathrooms, closets, garages, and mudrooms by providing affordable luxury cabinet fronts that are compatible with IKEA's sturdy and reliable base products. This new venture marks a significant expansion for the company, moving beyond its "IKEA-hack" origins to offer a complete cabinet solution.
The new Semihandmade Cabinets line, which officially launched in February, features over 40 customizable door choices designed to fit Semihandmade's own easy-to-assemble cabinet boxes. These boxes are available in white or maple plywood, providing a versatile foundation for various design aesthetics. A key aspect of this launch is the continued compatibility with all of Semihandmade’s existing designer door collections, including exclusive fronts created by celebrity and AD100 interior designer Sarah Sherman Samuel. Samuel's contributions have been instrumental in Semihandmade's success, with her original cabinet front collection significantly boosting the brand's recognition.
John McDonald, founder and CEO of Semihandmade, indicated that the development of an original cabinet line has been a long-standing request from customers and partners. While Semihandmade previously launched BOXI in March 2021, an affordable, fully assembled cabinet line, its shipping was limited to the West, and its cabinets were not compatible with Semihandmade doors. McDonald explained that efforts to integrate Semihandmade fronts with BOXI cabinets faced logistical challenges, leading to the decision to develop a dedicated Semihandmade Cabinet line that makes the most sense for the company’s vision and customer needs. The shift in focus towards crafting this original line began in 2023, with Samuel playing a crucial role in its development.
Sarah Sherman Samuel is actively incorporating the new Semihandmade Cabinets into her current projects, such as two homes in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, and actress Mandy Moore’s ADU. For the Clover Tudor House project, Samuel plans to use DIY Beaded for upper cabinets and DIY Quarterline for lower cabinets, with walnut Quarterline fronts on plywood cabinet boxes for the island. This approach addresses the need for extra strength in certain applications, which was a previously unavailable option. The launch of Semihandmade Cabinets is a phased rollout, with McDonald announcing plans to release new collections from four to five renowned designers within the next 12 to 18 months. While Semihandmade will continue to offer cabinet doors for IKEA hacks, future collections will exclusively be compatible with the new Semihandmade Cabinet boxes, solidifying the company's commitment to its proprietary system.
