The Only 4 Washable Rugs Worth Buying, Based on Serious Stress-Testing
Washable rugs have become increasingly popular, with major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Amazon offering various options alongside established brands such as Ruggable and Revival. The abundance of choices can make it challenging to determine which rugs genuinely offer value and performance. Experiences with less expensive rugs often reveal issues like poor quality, scratchy textures, and fading designs after only a few months of use, highlighting the significant variance in product quality across the market.
To identify the best washable rugs, a comprehensive evaluation process was undertaken, involving consultation with PureWow editors who have extensive experience with such products and several months of testing newer brands. The assessment focused on several key criteria: ease of washing, overall stain resistance, wear over time, general quality of construction, durability, comfort underfoot, value, and aesthetics. Each rug was subjected to real-world conditions, including placement in high-traffic areas, exposure to spills and messes, and multiple cycles of spot treatment, vacuuming, and machine washing. The resilience of each rug was evaluated at least four months after initial setup to ensure long-term performance. Recommendations were cross-referenced with other PureWow editors to validate their experiences, and each brand was scored using the PureWow100 scale, with silver or gold scores indicating top recommendations.
Key considerations for consumers include the capacity of their washing machine, as larger rugs (exceeding 5’x7’) may require folding or use of a commercial laundromat. The tested brands include Ruggable, lauded for its extensive variety (1,651 options from 2’x3’ to 10’x14’) and two-part system featuring a machine-washable, water-resistant cover and a non-slip pad. Ruggable scored 92/100, praised for its diverse aesthetics, detailed designs, and ease of washing, though the two-part system may take some getting used to. Revival, with a score of 94/100, stood out for its luxurious appearance, mimicking traditional rugs despite being washable. While not always water-resistant and sometimes gathering debris in high-traffic areas, its plush styles and direct-to-consumer model for affordability were highly valued. Tumble, an OEKO-TEX certified newcomer, scored 91/100, offering affordable, hand-illustrated designs with a cushiony pad and easy washability. However, its rug corners can sometimes detach, and the rug may bunch if furniture is frequently moved. Target Threshold, scoring 89/100, proved to be the best for washable accent rugs, offering durable Persian-style designs that retain vibrancy after washing, despite limited size and style options and occasional slipping. These findings provide a guide for consumers seeking reliable washable rugs that combine practicality with aesthetic appeal and durability.
