The Keemala Hotel: A Tale Of Four Ancient Clans

The Kaladwas Lal Haveli in Udaipur, Rajasthan, a 300-year-old ancestral home, has been meticulously restored and transformed into a luxury boutique hotel. The challenging restoration project was undertaken by Prakram Singh Chawra, the current custodian, who spent 17 years of his childhood in the haveli. The objective was not merely to renovate but to revive the haveli's historical essence and traditional Rajasthani construction methods, ensuring that its memories and architectural heritage are preserved and celebrated. The restoration, which took six years, three months, and twenty days, was guided by the late architect Viral Munshi. It focused on maintaining the original structure, carefully analyzing weight distribution, existing beams, stonework, and pillars, while integrating modern amenities such as bathrooms and kitchens. Key to this process was the revival of Gutai work, a lime-based construction technique used before the advent of cement, and the painstaking restoration of the Sajjangarh quarry stone façade. Master artisans from Pindwara and Nimbahera were engaged for intricate stone carvings, overseen by Shambhu Singh. Sandeep, a Gutai master, ensured the authentic application of this traditional technique. Divyabhanu Singh Sayla coordinated the craftsmen, while master wood craftsman Suresh recreated and restored doors, windows, and interior fixtures using traditional joinery, seasoned hardwood, and Mewari and Marwari design motifs. The haveli's interior evokes a sense of history through intricate jali work, colorful stained glass windows, rustic latticework, and ornate jharokhas. A small library within the hotel houses original photographs of Udaipur, hand-drawn maps, and rare archival finds. The hotel features seven themed rooms—Badal Mahal, Pratikriti, Rakht Chandan, Kalangi, Kesari, Junoo, and Van Grahana—each designed to tell a unique story connected to the Mewar clan's culture and legacy. For example, Badal Mahal features celestial hues and cloud-inspired decor, while Rakht Chandan pays tribute to Mewar warriors with intricate doorframes and stained glass. Junoo showcases historic artifacts and warm tones, and Van Grahana offers a tranquil, nature-inspired escape with green accents. Kalangi celebrates Mewari matrimonial traditions with opulent fabrics, and Kesari reflects the strength of local women through colorful decor. Each room's theme extends to its culinary offerings, with curated menus, guided rituals, and sensory details enhancing the guest experience. For instance, Badal Mahal serves steamed dishes and refreshing infusions, while Rakht Chandan offers bold spices and robust flavors. The House of Kaladwas, the hotel's restaurant, specializes in traditional Mewari cuisine, including dishes like Laal Maans, Panchkutta Dal, and Kadhi Pakoda. It also offers continental dishes infused with local spices and grains, creating a unique fusion. The rooftop restaurant provides an atmospheric dining experience with live music from Langas, serving slow-cooked Keema Thothari, Laal Maas, and Panchkutta Dal made with local ingredients. For special occasions, guests can enjoy curated multi-course dinners.
