the 'hi sea floating hotel' offers remote residences off the coast of china
The 'Hi Sea Floating Hotel,' envisioned as a 'floating island,' is situated 500 meters (1,640 feet) off the coast of China's southern Fujian province, near Dongshan Island in Zhangzhou City. This unique project, designed by Balance Design and led by Dong Xinmeng, provides guests with unobstructed views of the ocean, along with spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The remote marine location necessitated careful consideration of various environmental factors, including prevalent ocean currents and seasonal monsoons, to ensure the structural integrity and guest safety.
The design team drew inspiration from traditional fish rafts to develop a robust system that guarantees the hotel's buoyancy. A critical aspect of the engineering focused on enabling the structure to withstand severe weather conditions, particularly hurricanes. The roof of the hotel is constructed from advanced, corrosion-resistant materials, similar to those employed in airport terminals and luxury yachts, ensuring durability in the harsh marine environment. The outdoor deck features weather-resistant flooring, which not only offers a texture akin to solid wood but also boasts environmental friendliness and fire protection properties. Electrical power for the entire facility is supplied through submerged cables, a testament to the thoughtful planning for its offshore existence.
Inside, the hotel spans a total area of 500 square meters (5,382 sqf), comprising a shared living space, a fully equipped kitchen, and three individual guest rooms. The interior design emphasizes simplicity and a minimalist aesthetic, predominantly utilizing wooden tones throughout the spaces. Large openings are strategically incorporated to maximize the panoramic views of the surrounding water, creating an immersive experience for guests. Various seating arrangements, including comfortable couches and dedicated dining areas, are available, providing versatile options for individual relaxation or communal gatherings. Beyond the indoor amenities, guests have the opportunity to engage in activities such as fishing directly from the deck or unwinding in a specially integrated pool within the outdoor deck area.
The project underscores an innovative approach to architectural design in challenging environments, combining aesthetic appeal with functional resilience. Completed in 2020, the 'Hi Sea Floating Hotel' represents a successful integration of modern living with natural surroundings, offering a unique remote retreat experience. The comprehensive design addresses both the comfort and safety of its occupants while harmonizing with the dynamic coastal landscape. Photographer Xia Zhi captured the essence of the project through a series of evocative images.
