The Clever Drawer System Your Laundry Room Is Missing
This blog post highlights an innovative laundry room design by Sarah Stacey, focusing on a custom drawer system for air-drying clothes. The client, a couple who previously lived in Panama and frequently air-dried their garments, requested a specialized space upon moving to Austin, Texas. Stacey designed an open cabinet with plastic-mesh panels, each measuring 24 by 24 inches and spaced 6 inches apart, to accommodate delicate items that cannot be machine-dried or hung vertically. The choice of plastic mesh prevents snagging knitted fabrics, a common issue with metal alternatives, and ensures durability compared to fabric panels. This system provides a flat surface for drying, preventing distortions and damage to garments.
A significant concern for the homeowners was potential mold accumulation due to moisture from air-drying. Stacey addressed this by integrating a drainage pan at the bottom of the cabinet, designed to funnel excess water to the exterior of the house. Additionally, an exhaust fan was installed at the back of the cupboard to enhance air circulation and effectively remove lingering moisture, ensuring a dry and healthy environment for the clothes and the cabinet itself. This thoughtful engineering prevents mildew and maintains the integrity of the air-dried items.
Beyond the custom drying drawers, the laundry room incorporates several other space-saving and functional elements. Instead of a traditional freestanding rack, five floating hanging racks from Leifheit were mounted on the wall. These racks offer flexibility, allowing users to extend them all at once for larger loads or selectively use higher ones for longer items like dresses, optimizing vertical space. This modular approach maximizes drying capacity without cluttering the room.
To further enhance efficiency in a compact area, Stacey integrated a Hafele Ironfix ironing board directly into a drawer. This retractable solution eliminates the need for a bulky, standalone ironing board, contributing to a clean and organized aesthetic. Beneath this, slide-out hampers from Rev-a-Shelf (20-inch-deep racks) were incorporated. These integrated hampers provide discreet storage for laundry, ensuring that everything has a designated place and maintaining a tidy appearance, which was a key objective of the design to create a highly functional and uncluttered laundry space.
