The Bold Kitchen Cabinet Color That's Replacing Black
The trend of dark, bold black kitchen cabinets has gained popularity for its sleek and modern aesthetic. Black paint can add a chic tone to a kitchen, making features like white marble countertops or colorful tiling stand out. Additionally, black's versatility allows for diverse decoration opportunities. However, this trend has its drawbacks, such as potentially making a kitchen feel too dark and highlighting fingerprints on matte black surfaces. As an alternative, charcoal cabinet paint is emerging as a new trend, offering a balanced solution.
Charcoal paint, along with butter yellow and earthy greens, is an up-and-coming color choice for modern kitchens. Expert designer Julia Lauve notes a rise in soft charcoal popularity in 2025, specifically mentioning Sherwin-Williams' Iron Ore. Clients reportedly favor charcoal for its softer yet vibrant and moody qualities, and its ease of pairing with other kitchen elements. Charcoal offers a range of undertones, allowing for customization to suit specific kitchen designs. Other notable charcoal paint options include Benjamin Moore's Kendall Charcoal and BEHR's Cracked Pepper, which was the brand's 2024 Color of the Year.
Incorporating charcoal into home decor is straightforward, as it complements many popular kitchen trends. When using charcoal cabinets, careful consideration of countertop color is essential. If existing countertops are dark, such as granite or black marble, maintaining a clear visual separation between counters and cabinets is advised to prevent the space from becoming too dark. Conversely, if countertops feature white bases with charcoal or black streaks, charcoal cabinetry can elegantly unify the room's design.
For flooring and tiling, a variety of options exist, though designers caution against an excessive use of dark features that could overwhelm the space. Pairing charcoal cabinets with colorful tiled backsplashes in hues like green or blue can be effective, particularly if the charcoal paint's undertone aligns with these colors. Alternatively, patterned white tiles can create an upscale look without adding more colors. When selecting flooring, it is generally recommended to choose a color either lighter or darker than the charcoal cabinets to introduce dimension and prevent a flat aesthetic.
