The Best Dog Gates | Reviews by Wirecutter

This article provides a comprehensive guide to selecting the best dog gates for home use, building upon extensive research initially conducted for baby gates. The primary recommendation is the Cardinal Gates SS-30 Stairway Special, praised for its robust hardware-mounted design, ease of installation, and secure latching mechanism that is easily operable by humans but not by pets. This gate is constructed entirely from metal, ensuring durability against even large or boisterous dogs, and offers versatility in placement by allowing angled installation, accommodating various wall stud alignments, and fitting openings up to 42.5 inches wide, with extensions available for wider spaces. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, the Toddleroo by North States Easy Swing & Lock Gate is presented. While it features more plastic in its latch mechanism and requires direct alignment for installation, it remains secure, user-friendly, and offers automatic self-latching. It fits openings up to 47.85 inches wide and is a cost-effective alternative for households where angled installation or extreme durability against strong pets is not a primary concern. The article also addresses specific needs, such as accommodating taller or more agile dogs. For such cases, the North States Tall Easy Swing & Lock Gate is recommended, which, at 36 inches high, adds significant height compared to standard gates. This model retains the features of the budget pick but offers enhanced containment for pets capable of jumping over lower barriers. For very wide openings, the Toddleroo by North States Deluxe Decor Gate is introduced. This gate can span up to 6 feet wide on its own and even further with extensions, making it suitable for large passages. However, its multi-panel construction can make it less stable, and it includes a bottom rail that may present a tripping hazard, particularly if installed near stairs. A critical discussion point is the rejection of pressure-fit gates. These gates are deemed less secure, prone to causing damage to walls and railings, and feature bottom bars that pose a tripping risk. The authors emphasize that hardware-mounted gates are superior in terms of safety and structural integrity, even for temporary use in other homes, recommending crates and leashes as more appropriate alternatives for restricting a dog's movement in such situations. The article further touches upon the limitations of gates for cats. It acknowledges that most agile cats can easily overcome gates by jumping, squeezing through, or finding alternative routes. Gates with integrated cat doors are generally not recommended due to clunky design, pressure-mounted installation, and the potential for larger dogs to attempt to use them. The methodology for testing these gates involved extensive evaluation, including durability tests, ease of installation, and real-world usage with pets, ensuring that the recommendations are based on practical performance and safety.
