The Best Cat Scratchers for 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter

This comprehensive guide to cat scratchers aims to help cat owners find the most suitable options to satisfy their feline companions' natural scratching instincts while protecting household furniture. The article emphasizes that scratching is an essential behavior for cats, serving purposes such as play, claw maintenance, stress relief, and territory marking. Without appropriate scratchers, cats are prone to directing this behavior toward furniture. The selection process for the recommended scratchers involved extensive research and testing. Initially, 34 different cat scratchers, categorized into posts, loungers, and wall scratchers, were identified. This list was then refined based on strong online reviews, availability from multiple retailers, and sufficient size to accommodate a cat's full stretch (at least 18 inches for horizontal and 25 inches for vertical scratchers). A total of 13 scratchers were short-listed for in-depth testing, which was conducted with the assistance of 74 cats and kittens from the Little Wanderers NYC rescue group. The testing methodology focused on three key criteria: quality of construction and durability, stability, and scratchable area. Durability was assessed by examining craftsmanship, applying plastic meat shredders to simulate claw marks, and observing the scratchers after a week or two of use by the cat panelists. Stability was evaluated using a 10-pound bag of rice as a stand-in to check for scooting or tipping, and human volunteers also provided feedback on stability during actual cat use. The scratchable area and overall size were also critical factors, with a preference for larger scratchers that allowed cats more room to stretch. The top recommendation is the Pioneer Pet SmartCat The Ultimate Scratching Post. This post is praised for its durable woven-sisal surface, which is superior to carpet in longevity and less prone to fraying than sisal rope. Its solid-wood base ensures stability, even during vigorous scratching. Standing 32 inches tall, it provides ample height for most cats to achieve a full body stretch. The rectangular post offers nearly 900 square inches of scratchable surface, making it one of the largest available. Despite minor manufacturing inconsistencies, such as occasional loose weaves, and the need for periodic rotation due to its rectangular shape, its durability and aesthetic appeal, fitting well with mid-century decor, make it a standout choice. For smaller spaces, the Pioneer Pet SmartCat Bootsie’s Combination Scratcher is recommended. This flat, versatile model is made from the same durable woven sisal and can be mounted on a wall or laid on the floor. It measures 24 inches long, sufficient for horizontal scratching, and is thin enough to be discreetly stored or mounted in narrow areas. Its rubber feet enhance stability and reduce noise during use. Although some cats initially found it challenging to grip, its overall versatility and durability were highly appreciated by testers. The article also provides guidance on how to choose a cat scratcher, emphasizing the importance of observing a cat's existing scratching preferences, ensuring the scratcher is large enough, and experimenting with different types and placements to maintain a cat's interest and prevent furniture damage.
