The 8 Best Sheets of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter

This comprehensive guide reviews various types of bed sheets, offering recommendations based on extensive testing over a decade. The article details the best options across different fabrics and weaves, including cotton percale, cotton sateen, flannel, linen, budget-friendly sheets, printed sheets, and those suitable for dorm rooms and California King beds. The L.L.Bean 280-Thread-Count Pima Cotton Percale Sheet Set is highlighted as the top pick for percale sheets, favored for its cool, crisp feel, breathability, reasonable pricing, and exceptional durability. While some users might find percale slightly textured, these sheets are noted for getting softer with age and performing well in warmer climates. The article also mentions other commendable percale options like Brooklinen’s Classic Percale Core Sheet Set and Target’s Threshold Organic Percale Sheet Set. For those who prefer a smoother, more luxurious feel, the JCPenney Wrinkle Guard 400TC Cotton Sheet Set is recommended as the best sateen option. These sheets offer a satiny, heavier texture, making them warmer and less prone to wrinkling compared to percale. Despite some minor static cling and several rebrandings, their consistent high quality since 2014 is emphasized. Additional sateen sheet recommendations include Cuddledown’s 400 Thread Count Solid Sateen Sheet Set and Target’s Threshold Solid Performance 400 Thread Count Sheet Set. In the category of flannel sheets, the L.L.Bean Ultrasoft Comfort Flannel Sheet Set is praised for its softness, quality construction, and ability to keep users warm in cold weather. These sheets, made from high-quality long-staple cotton, are durable and retain their plushness, though they may shed more lint initially. They are available in various sizes and colors, including classic checked prints. The Cultiver Linen Sheet Set is presented as the top choice for linen sheets, valued for its relative softness among linen options and a wide range of colors. While linen sheets inherently wrinkle easily, Cultiver’s set stands out for its comfort and fewer complaints about premature thinning. Swatches are available for those wishing to sample the fabric before purchase. Budget-conscious shoppers are directed to Target’s Threshold Performance 400 Thread Count Sheet Set for sateen and Target’s Threshold 250 Thread Count Organic Percale Sheet Set for percale. Both options offer excellent value, performing comparably to much more expensive sets. The sateen version is smooth and drapes well, while the organic percale offers a cool, crisp feel. These sheets also feature helpful 'top or bottom' and 'side' labels for easier bed-making. For printed sheets, the Brooklinen Classic Percale Core Sheet Set is recommended for its crisp, cool feel and a rotating selection of modern prints. These Oeko-Tex certified sheets are thinner and lighter than other percale options, made from long-staple cotton for durability. The article also addresses specific needs such as sheets for dorms, recommending the Twin/Twin XL sizes of Target’s Threshold Performance 400 Thread Count Sheet Set, and California King sheets, noting that many top picks are available in this size. Finally, the guide touches upon organic cotton sheets, clarifying that while beneficial for ethical reasons, organic certification doesn't automatically equate to superior sheet quality. Many recommended sets are Oeko-Tex certified, ensuring they are free from harmful substances, which is particularly useful for individuals with sensitive skin. The article advises against bamboo (viscose rayon) and microfiber sheets due to environmental concerns regarding their production and microplastic pollution, respectively, advocating instead for cotton and linen as preferred materials.
